So I have a 9 year old boy that I've been mentoring on my trapline. He spotted an otter behind his house and wanted to catch it. I let him make all the choices. He was worried about his neighbors cat so he decided on his live trap. His bait choice was a carrot because that's what we use for muskrat. I was pretty sure it wouldn't work but that is how you learn. Well he showed this old dog a new trick.

It was very cool; I could see with all that snow and coming out of the water on their trail with some cover they would run in like going into a body grip. I doubt the carrot came into play, it looks like the otter didn't eat it in the trap. I am sure he was very excited to see that in there and I would bet the otter was not a bit happy.

Just a guess but I would venture that the trap location was spot on and more of a factor in the catch than the carrot.

But congratulations are in order for both of you.

Congratulations to your son. Great story, now go to the grocery store and buy a bag of carrots.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

Not my son. I did a beaver demo for a group of homeschooled kids 3 years ago. Parents know nothing about the outdoors. He asked if he could come with when I went trapping. He is my shadow. It's more fun watching him learn. The trap was in the perfect spot.

Nice job. Cages do work for otters. I know of a couple guys that do raccoon ADC on the river. They don't use carrots but catch otter incidentals in the cages. They are turned loose.
