Gave up on making my own sulphated fat oil for tanning. I remember someone, Boco I remember, stating there are fatliquors better for tanning than neatsfoot. Any suggestions? This is just for finishing the pelts after I tan them and am drying and breaking. Thanks!

Are you wanting something to tan with or just an oil to lubricate the hide fibers?

I believe just an oil to lubricate the fibers. My understanding is that after taking my pelts out of the tanning solution rubbing a light coat of oil as I am drying and breaking will help make for a better leather and help prevent it cracking.

I also have soft soap made from raccoon fat. I am wondering if animal fat which has been sulfated provides lubrication and protection for tanned pelts, would animal fat which has been saponified also provide protection and lubrication? Idk, just looking for ideas. Hella tight budget.

You actually dont need sulfinated oils for oiling the leather. The sulfinated oils are used in the tanning step. Unsulfinated oils wont actually penetrate the fibers. You can use cheap handlotion to oil the hides.
