This is just as the Montana winters have been for decades and need to keep doing, with no dry winters.

Two more inches in just an hour or so.

With as cold as it is, the snow is perfect. Fluffy and easily dealt with...the plow vechile should have no problem grin

Sharon — please post pictures of the snow covered Big Sky country. It’s amazing how in these east coast towns ( south of New England ) get 4-6” of snow and it shuts everything down! Schools, businesses, it’s crazy. And there are accidents all over, because people aren’t used to driving in it and they cannot stay put.

I visited Wyoming this fall. Will visit Rocky Mountains soon hopefully, maybe next fall. But I won’t stay or invade your beautiful place like many do, I will just visit. Mountains are a beautiful treat to me. I can see the coastal bays from my living room and am 7 miles from the ocean. These landscapes have their beauties as well, but hard to compare to the snow covered Rocky’s. Please post a few pictures as the winter goes along. And stay warm in the mean time!

John

Jo, I can do that later , but you won't see the mountains, visibility is zero. It is sheer whiteout. But the trees and snow are wonderful in short sight range.

Gotta get out the snowshoes and hike around a bit , I did think of taking some shots earlier, but after my work time is up.

I'll see what I can do.

Montanans don't mind those who are appreciative of American culture, the Constitution, and the western lifestyle. So you would not be an "invasion " .

Gonna be nasty for sure but not as long lasting back then. People were actually walking across the Ohio River into KY in 78. If I remember right, jbyrd was over there telling us to go back.

They backed off the amount here in northwest Illinois. At once was possible up to a foot now 1 to 3 inches. Winds still gonna howl though.

The January 1978 blizzard was rough in Michigan but sounds like Ohio got it worse. Or at least i dont remember the snow amounts as that horrible (30" or so) here but the wind was vicious. I recall it drifting up into the power lines in some of the open fields. Most people around where i grew up consider the Jan 1967 storm way worse from a snowfall perspective than the two storms in the 70's. There was a good storm around Y2K time also. Dont remember exactly when. seems like it was similar---30" or so. i suspect some of the earlier storms were considered worse due to the lack of snow removal equipment. i've got old black and white pictures from my great grand parents of a storm in early 1900s where they were digging roads out with horse teams. Those drifts were way worse than anything i've ever seen in my lifetime

I'm kinda surprised to see this much of snow event forecasted for so early in the year.

If I remember right it snowed 49 inches in two days then in 67.

Jo, here are a few from today. I haven't driven out, and the plow man hasn't dug this out yet. Still snowing, got a foot as of earlier this afternoon. The parts of the drive here have been plowed several times already, and it is almost snowed in now.

Included is a pic of my semi wild rabbits, Diva (the dun ) and her two blackies, I call them my slippers grin I put up a small tray with hay pellets and bread treats . They hate the snow depth and leap through it in big bounds.

Below is my most favorite conifer, lowland Hemlock. I also have transplanted mountain Hemlock from my nearby mountains, love them both, along with cedars, which get huge in the region . They look so nice with snow on them, their tops drooping as their signature .
Should be pushing four feet in depth tomorrow sometime, if this keeps up.

Thanks for sharing Sharon! Beautiful place , just like a dream. Cabin tucked away in the mountains. Ya know, those rabbits will grow tougher with age, be a good week for rabbit stew grin

Going to get cold here this weekend, should make for good waterfowling. Duck and dumplings on the menu!

Stay safe and warm

John

Thats a nice crib Sharon.

White, I find it amazing the difference temps of just a couple hundred miles. We are coming up to our coldest night so far this winter. It will be -6 tonight ! smile although we will have 30 + mph winds along with it so not so nice. We have been having a warmer winter, not much snow too, can still walk around just fine. I can deal with this.

Everyone always talks about the Blizzard of '78, but where I grew up the Blizzard of '77 was the one to be remembered.

The day it started, my grandfather drove the half hour to work in the 2" of fresh snow. By 10 AM the Union workers were sent home. My grandfather, being salaried, was told to stay. By 11:30, it was a full fledged blizzard with sustained winds of 40mph and gusts up to 70. Snow was waist deep by noon. My grandfather had a good friend co-worker who was Union. When he got home that day, he turned around and made the 20 mile trip back on a snowmobile to get my grandfather during the blizzard, knowing he had small kids at home. It was well after dark when my grandfather got home.

They were snowed in for over a week with no power, but luckily had wood heat. Drifts were recorded in excess of 35'.

I wasn't born yet. But I wish I had been... sounds exciting.

Jo, I think I’m saving my rabbits for some “rainy day “, not these snowy days grin that’s my excuse to enjoying them . They really are fun for me to pet them. Soft fur. Good for my blood pressure grin

Thank you, Jeff and Boco. Dropping fast to -17…wind chill expecting to be -50…more east of the divide. All my Montana peeps out there, on the prairies , be safe. I don’t get hardly any wind at all here, which I love. You folks who do are tougher than I enduring that near constant wind.
