Have you tried any of John Grahams #3 Coyote Specials? To me, they are the trap so simple it almost cannot fail.

That, too. Firm back wall on the bed. Jam dog jaw tight into the wall pack and push tight to the loose jaw shoving the whole trap tight.

Yes, well built trap but to much of a good thing. Almost to much spring, his round jaw #2 are even worse, and the round faced jaw edges don't cut they penetrate. Those #3 montanas are the only trap that has drawn blood on me. And that was from a straight on simple oops hit. Busted the skin on impact. But these are regular jaw not offset or laminated. IMO they need to be laminated.

I'm using the wolf creek #2 now and they are about right save for the jaw face which is a rough raw stamping. They will cut if not run across a grinder.

Ah, mine are both offset and laminated so fairly easy on the foot. I caught the same blue heeler twice in one winter in them so either he is slow or they didn't hurt that much LOL
