Im looking for recommendations for a wood stove to heat a 800 sq ft cabin. I need at least 8 hours of burn time? I have heard good things about the Blaze King Princess. What do you recommend?

I love my older Quadra-Fires. Mine are 3100's, that might be too much stove for your application.

Most newer wood stoves will not burn eight hours on a load. Due to environmental regulations they construct the stove in a way that does not allow you to choke them down enough in order to restrict the air flow. You can modify a new stove in order to achieve this, or you can buy an older stove from pre-regulation days.

Some states like Washington (and other leftist States) have even made it illegal to sell a used, pre-regulation wood stove; of course nobody pays attention to laws like that.

I know you asked about wood, but considering your state is awash in coal, you might want to consider it. I tended this fire before going to work and came home fourteen and a half hours later to a stove still chugging along at four hundred degrees. There are way more btu's packed into coal than there are wood in an apples-to-apples comparison.

This is the hippy dippy solution. Said to work well, and if it did, would be ideal for your application. Fire burns hot and fast, but residual heat radiates for hours.

Make a double drum stove a good value for the money.

I'm on my third Blaze King. Two versions of the King in the old house and currently a Princess. I agree with Waggler on this. The Princess is not going to let you damp it down to simmer unattended for an eight hour stretch. The King will but it is a huge stove for 800 sq ft.

Look for an older unit that doesn't have the reburner in the top. Environmental regulation stuff Efffs up everything that is good.

I've had a Princess Blaze King for many years. I can actually shut it down if I want . It will simmer all night , with wood left over to start up in the morning . I like a good start up after a night of damped down heating.

I would rather be "over horsed " than under. If I want the extra punch, I have it .

The only thing I don't like, is the Princess does not have a built-in ashtray, but the King does. For that reason alone, for a bit of extra money, I should have got the King.

I want to clarify a wee bit on shutting the damper on the Princess, in understanding what James and Waggler mentioned. Those converters are a pain, just as Waggler stated.

I have used the damper dial on the side , to slow or shut it down. The lever on the same side, is what engages the converter . If I need to shut it down , I'll disengage that CC and just let it die down gradually. It won't stop immediately, it takes a bit of time.

I so dislike that smoke ! I do everything I can to limit that ...even down to when I load in more wood, having it right by the door and ready, leaving no time for it to begin smoking. Ugh...

I always use dry wood, too, nothing green, even a little.

If I want to dampen the burn , or shut it down , it takes some time to accomplish that. It won't totally shut down right away...but I have found, I can eventually get it to do that ...leaving that CC lever in the off position. Letting it go as a typical stove burn without that CC engaged.

BK says not to let it burn without the CC engaged, but I have and do anyway. That procedure has worked for me.

That's why I mentioned that my Qudra-Fires are older. Both are pre-ACC (Automatic Combustion Control). Basically, ACC will not let you shut a stove all the way down, as it cools air is automatically let in to increase the burn.

My Quadra-fires were rated the cleanest burning non-cat stoves during the years of their manufacture.

Good luck finding a used one though, people really like to hang on to them. It took me two years to find the one that heats my camp. I was finally able to get rid of the old Buck Stove in there, what a difference.

Get yourself a baby bear fisher wood stove, use one in my

I’m In northeast wi so my winters are fairly cold.

I highly recommend my Jotul Oslo. It is non catalytic and completely controllable. I suspect it may be more expense than you want for a hunting cabin but a smaller model may be a viable option.

I’m with Kasey. I also have a Fisher Baby Bear. Excellent stove for up to around 1,000 sqft. My cabin is just under 800 sqft and I can get the temp into the 90s F with little trouble. Depending on how much I load it up and the species of wood, I usually reload after around five hours.

I have one of those self propelled Ecofans on top of the stove that I can see from where I sleep. With a small night light in the main room I can tell when I have to throw another log on by how fast the fan is spinning.

Dad has had the Blaze King Princess since the mid 80's. Wonderful stove. It has the catalytic in it. He says it is not a problem and has only changed cleaned it a couple of times. That stove does shut down well as Sharon stated. Get up in the morning, open it and the wood blazes back up. It heats his 1800 sq. ft. house well. I like it better than my quadra fire 4300.

Also, in the basement he has some brand of box stove. It loads from the top and has 2 dampers on top as well. About as simple as you can get for a wood stove. Works great. Don't know about the run times, but its not bad. Only down side is scoop ash out. But something like that would serve you well.

You dont need an expensive fancy stove for a hunt camp.
Seen and used plenty of good home made woodstoves in tents,camps and bunkhouses that worked great.

the last weeks when it was cold I didn't go less than a bed of coals I could rake forward and toss new wood on for around 10 days

burn the first fire of the day with the primary air open to make sure to cook the chimney dry and clean.

I have a Blaze King Scirocco with a CC and it works great you just have to use it right, I've used it for seven years and haven't had to clean the CC yet. I load it up at night and let it burn hot for 30 minutes before damping it down and it will last till morning and thats with spruce, with birch it lasts even longer. With such long burn times it really cuts back on the amount of wood I use.

I have an englander. That is all I use for heat all winter. It will burn for 10 tp 12 hours and have coals to get it started in the morning. Check them out.

Looks like my first wood stove but it was called wonder wood and was from rual king. Brought my 500 a month electric bill in the winter down to 65 in that old 800sq ft clap board house I was renting. But that was over 20 years ago and I bought the stove for 350. 50 off becuse of the large ding right on the top in the middle. (I didn't care about looks I was poor and wanted to be able to afford heat. It worked and hot me hooked on ash pans and larger and long fire boxes.
It was also much lighter to move than my cast iron stoves. But I left that one at the rent house.

I'm looking for a coal/wood cookstove, hint hint PA guys. But that wouldn't suit your needs. I'd look on craigslist, marketplace and try to find a older one in good shape. We used to have a Brunco and we loved it. I always liked one with a flat top so you can cook on it.

If you buy a qualifying stove, Uncle Sam is giving a 30% tax break on the stove, chimney, and installation costs up to 2K for the tax year 2023. Its changed from the 2022 tax credit that gave 26% credit without being capped. Do a search on the qualifying database, most pellet and cat stoves are listed as qualifying, plus a handful of non cat stoves

I keep my 600 sqft house warm and mostly toasty with a Timberline, great stove if you can find one! A load of 6-7 chunks will last a good 10 to 12 hrs. For a hunting cabin, might consider a barrel stove kit, not a heart breaker if stolen.
