Use them right out of the box or treat them anyway you want. Marten are not trap shy.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

Black and wax.
Only have to do them every few years.
Some guys leave their traps out in the off season and never bring them in.They spray them with pam cooking spray at end of season-they get a nice hard brown patina on them and dont stain the fur.
Some guys also dip in black rustoleum paint cut 50 50 with naphtha.
It lasts pretty good on marten traps set in elevated boxes.

I use speed dip just to keep them from rusting. I tried waxing them once. Wont make that mistake again!

do unto others as you would have them do unto you

Formula #1 and add a swivel or two to the cable in case you catch a fisher.

About half of mine stay out all year, but lost a bunch to fire last year. Some I’ve painted, some dipped. Even have a handful of the Victor stainless ones

Waxed. A waxed bodygrip is more sensitive and faster than a speed dipped or painted trap.

Much easier on fine marten fur too especially when removing frozen marten from traps-waxed traps dont stick to the fur.
Waxed is the gold standard for marten traps.
On a good trap like an LDL There is no problem if your triggers havent been played around with before waxing.I carry a piece of a chainsaw file in my pocket for other traps like belisles.A few swipes on the dog with the file will correct them. The wax on the jaws will allow them to fire crisp after filing on the dog.

Throw some rustoleum paint on them and they’re good for many years. Painted mine about 6 years ago, some have rust on them. I set them anyways!
