What most people assume that is untrue is that 'fallout" will happen or get everywhere. Fallout are materials that have come in contact with the actual nuclear explosions and then come back to earth later. Fallout is mostly produced by ground bursts taking out hardened targets. Most "soft" targets such as what's on an air field, army base, or surface navy base, would be attacked with air bursts for maximum blast radius. The only radioactivity produced by air busts is within the thermal and blast effects diameter so those aspects would kill you first. Sorry, the idea that only very remote people will survive is fantasy. I'm not saying no one would die, it would be the greatest mass casualty event in history, but most Americans would live initially, unless there was an all out air bursts attacks on the cities. And why do that unless they just want to kill people. But you do you, and I'll do me.

Not in the sense of a dark cloud of dust in the upper atmosphere and lower temps for decades. That worse case scenario would be the result of multiple as in hundreds of ground bursts throwing massive volumes of debris into the atmosphere. Even then there is conjecture on how long before gravity and rain, some caused by the debris itself, brings it back to earth. BTW, this would also be the worst case fallout scenario as this debris would be irradiated.

Ground bursts are wasteful of energy when an air burst above would achieve the same effective crushing result over a wider area. Ground bursts are more effective on specific hardened targets. Cities and infrastructure are not hardened.

But you can expect darkness as in total collapse of the grid, if not from direct damage then from the cascade to follow.

Oh and one thing airbursts excel at are massive Electromagnetic Pulses, EMP, that'll fry almost all electrical components within reach.
