We will be putting a wood burner in our hunting/getaway cabin. Do you guys prefer a flat hearth for your wood stove or a elevated hearth for a wood stove?

I don't think it makes much of a difference. Mine at camp and the one at home are both raised about and inch (backer board & tile). The one at my old farmhouse was brick and about three or four inches above floor level.

Eh...wot?

you need to get a minimum thickness to make code so if your not planning well ahead it is a lot easier to put a raised hearth in an existing structure.
flat is nice , but it can mean a bunch of cutting , floor removal , structural framing and some planning to hit the exact thickness you want.

it has been a while I think 1 1/8 minimum and if you have layers they had to have lapped joints so if it cracked it still couldn't reach the floor

mine is 3 layers of 1/2inch concrete board with tile on top it is about 2 inches mortar between the layers

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I made mine 12 inches high,it is a lot easier to put wood in when you have a bad back.

Depending on the stove, raised can make it easier to get wood in and ashes out without bending over as much.

Since I started making my fires “ Top Down” , I’ve decided it would be nice to have the stove elevated a little. First thing in the morning, it’s a long ways to the floor and then a few grunts and groans to get beck up.

I believe both styles have their advantages….. my cabin floor is not insulated so I went with a flat hearth …. As stated higher is easier to load wood ….
