Thanks. Another great video. We have both here, but I wouldn't call them a dominant shrub. A buddy planted some Americans in his yard and when they are about ready to get ripe, he puts big tarps around their bases. When they're ready, he goes around and shakes the shrubs and collects all the nuts he wants. He does that a few times. After he gets all he wants, he pulls the tarps, and leaves the rest for the critters

Rat-Pack - that is exactly how some of the smaller hazelnut farmers do it.

In Oregon, where 98% of the US hazelnut crop is grown the nuts are allowed to fall free of the husks and custom harvesters go through the orchard and vacuum up everything. When I was a kid the orchards used to hire people to rake the nuts from under the trees to the center isle and then a harvester would come through and scoop them up.

Right out of college I had a job as with the state's statistical reporting service to go out and make nut counts in orchards so that the industry would know ahead of time what that's year harvest was going to be. Pretty fun job.

Oregon hazelnut yields used to average 1500-2000 lbs an acre but with the newer blight resistant varieties that have come on in the last 15 years or so yields are starting to double the old yields.

Prices vary greatly depending on what the hazelnut crop is like in other parts of the world...mostly Turkey. In recent years I've seen the dryer prices anywhere from .40 to 1.05 per lb

They are quite common up in the Peace Gardens area of ND

A bird that is close to my heart is the American Timberdoodle as I went through Manitoba and did singing ground surveys and set up the routes for this bird, 30 years later we finely have a season here.

It is interesting to see the seed weevil exit hole in one of your collected acorns

in Europe the grouse we call Ruffy is called the Hazel grouse for some unknown reason

The Beaked can be found up to about 53*N
