Before my time a cousin trespassed on my grandpa's with a snowmobile and got himself all cut up on barb wire. The cousin successfully sued my grandpa because it was not a "legally marked" fence. Apparently if you don't build your fence to state standards any moron can hurt themselves on it and sue successfully.

Family animosity remains to this day from that incident 60 years ago.

Hydro tower guy wires have taken out a few joy riders over the years too.
Parked vehicles on sideroads have taken out a few also,as well as thin ice.

These tragedys are usually caused by people over driving their lights at night, and most are young people.

Around here, in the 70's and 80's, they were used by guys chasing coyotes.

Just like all things in life a few ruin things for the many.
When younger a buddy who lived on a farm had a intense hatred for snowmobiles and the people who ride them.
I found out that the folks in the subdivision next to their farm regularly cut the fences just to joy ride in the open fields.
That was bad enough but when they cut the fences for the dairy cows pasture that was too much.
Luckily the cows were not pastured in the winter.

I can see a use and benefit for snowmobiles on farm and other work situations but like jet skis, 4 wheelers, and dirt bikes seems like the majority are used just for fun.
Its kinda hooray for me screw everyone and everything else kind of mindset that rules the day. Sad really once you think about it.

Just submerged booby traps in dirty water waiting to hang you up or rip the motor off the boat with the transom.

Ive about ran through the electric fence gates a few time on my grandfather's farm because sometimes you can't see that sine string of wire, especially on the wider gates and you can't see the insulated handle.

Some years ago, I remember a farmer who didn't like snowmobilers running across his land. He put a fence up on the trail. A snowmobiler hit the fence and was almost killed. The farmer got sued and was arrested. I don't recall if he went to jail or what happened. The best option would have been for him to file a complaint with the local law. That could have resulted in a re-routing of the snowmobile trail off his land. Pretty simple fix.

As an American I'm growing tired of our ancestors being compared to the migrants of today.

that sounds like one of those , the land owner said yes to the trail and the Leasing farmer said no but that wasn't an option in his lease. so he did a dumb thing.

Some fishermen tired of the jet skiers hung high strength monofilament line across favorite fishing chutes.

A couple of weeks ago, an idiot on a snowmobile hit a 2 strand rope fence that one of my neighbors put up, when the snowmobiler trespassed through my hayfield. He was zipping along when he hit it. He bent 2 fence posts towards each other and most of the way back. I don't care if snowmobilers stay on the right away, but it ticks me off when they go hundreds of yards into my property mowing down saplings and berry bushes I planted. A few years ago, a group of snowmobilers poached a lot of deer on my street at night and came driving through my front yard, with the deer tied on the hoods. Another time, a snowmobiler went up my driveway with 2 others and got hung up on a telephone pole I keep across there. They were hurriedly trying to get loose when I went outside and took off at great speed when I got close. I would be very happy to see the snowmobiles confiscated and destroyed when used illegally, including for just trespassing.

A few years ago I was at anchor in the upper bay and this clown on a jet ski though my boat was some sort of turning mark and left buzzing me. I looked down into the galley and saw this cantaloupe. I used to be quite good at ten pin bowling. One thought crossed with another and on his next pass I hit him square in the chest with it and bold him right off that jeezeless contraption. He quit buzzing my boat after that. I flat out refuse to fix jet skies as well.

Kid in my son's class (16 years old) was driving a snowmobile down the river when he hit a fence, it nearly decapitated him. He barely survived and has a port in his neck to talk though ever since.

Happened in our district a few years ago. Older couple on a 2up machine where the passengers head is higher than the driver. They were going pretty slow getting ready to cross an approach. Down guy just missed the driver but clipped his wife breaking the neck. Wire had no shield and the next day an employee was sent out to install one. Law suit. Because the utility sent someone to install a yellow shield after the incident they won the case and settled out of court.

In WW2 the jeep drivers had a rig setup like that to cut wire stretched across the roads.

My dad told me about that one. He drove a jeep around for the Captain.

Nothing gets my blood boiling faster than snowmobiles. I have had so much trouble with them. They have cut our sap lines, constantly screamed at us for crossing the trail with our trucks ( the trail crossed our sap driveway). My old boss had a brother who owned a farm with a trail on it. A kid went joy riding off the trail and hit a cattle fence and killed himself. Now we own some land of our own that had a trail when we acquired it. They never in 6 years contacted us about having a trail there. This trail goes directly up our driveway to the property. Last year I got there to hunt deer opening day and they were there pounding in their trail markers. He got a piece of my mind and it took everything I had to not completely go off on him, and I am usually a clam demeanor kind of guy. In the end I let them keep the trail but he did leave in tears.
