The Boy and I both drew this year. Only 2 points each. That was a shock for sure, as I figured it'd take 6 years minimum to draw and never thought we'd draw the same year. His momma is a bit nervous since I told her he'd be 16 or 17 before we'd get 'em.



I've never hunted bear but I'm excited to start the learning process. It's going to be an interesting year with The Boy hope we have a bit of success.

Congratulations

He's 12 shoots a 30-30 for deer thinking that'll do for bear. He's taken 3 deer with it and one with a xbow all shot through the heart so I know he can shoot. We'll see how he responds to the adrenaline dump when a bear comes in.

While I don't know much about bear hunting with a 30/30 and I suspect it will be just fine, you got to ask yourself if you really want to pass up any excuse to buy him a new gun?

I have been saving a ton of bait for years, in sealed buckets and plastic drums might need to get some cookie dough as well. Bread jelly cookies pastries and such now I hope it's enough. This two tag thing is daunting.

I might be nearly as excited as you are! I love bear hunting and love the meat. Most of my bear hunting has been with dogs and was some of the most exciting hunting I have ever done. One year my son killed a 419 pounder. It was his first time bear hunting. Got a good story about the time I hunted over bait east of Black River Falls I will share with you sometime.

A 30 30 will drop a bear as long as you dont hit bone.
308 or 30 06 is a better choice,especially if you sight a big bear.

Boco I will think that statement over this year and he may end up carrying my dad's 30-06 or a new to him .308. I do have a good friend, actually the guy who gave The Boy his 30-30, who has some loads for the gun that run pretty hot and pattern very nicely.

My wife has killed moose,deer and bear with a 257 Roberts. If your son does his part a 30-30 is more then adequate. Congratulations on the tags.

A bear can't take a bullet as well as a deer, he will be fine with a 30-30. put it in the vitals and he won't go anywhere. Good luck to you and your son.
