Most of the dogs I have and have had just grab and shake opossums and then discard them. I have one dog, Althea, who is half Anatolian Shepherd and half English Shepherd, who just quietly grabs opossums, without harming them, brings them back and then dumps them on Diane's feet, which I must admit I find hilarious.DIane doesn't overly freak out or anything, but it's still really funny, because it always surprises her. I don't think anyone expects a dog to run up at top speed and dump a live opossum on them.

Minutes ago, Althea just dumped yet another live opossum on Diane's feet. I then dispatched it like always do. I can't stop laughing.

My German Shorthair loves possums too. He picks them up without harming them and proudly brings them straight to me.

Your dogs would probably die at a young age down here unfortunately. They’d run themselves to death gathering up possums, lol! Thought we had the market on them.

My dog does the typical grab and shake - as he does with a skunk. For those of you who have dogs that deliver the possum unharmed to your feet - what do they do with a skunk?

Mine hasn't found a skunk yet. I hope he never does!

Mine wouldn't or they got to eat after their pet opossum for a week.

I hate a trashy hound so as soon as pup treed one it got led off the tree without praise or word put in the box and taken straight home. Next morning there was a caged grinner sitting directly over pups feed dish.
Grinner got fed every morning until it was satisfied before pup ever got a taste of their's. A week or so of that and pup will swear off grinners.

I've been sprayed 3 times and gotten quill on me a few more times, but so far none of my dogs have gotten sprayed by a skunk.

Raccoons probably taste better than opossums, because my dogs will frequently catch, kill and eat raccoons. It could also be because typically more than one dog catches a coon and the coons vainly try to fight, which causes them to be raw meat flavored when the dogs are done.

After the dogs catch them, the opossums typically play dead for a couple of minutes to a little over half an hour, if I don't dispatch them. They can take what looks like a serious amount of damage without dying. Althea just snatches opossums up like a toy, before delivering them at a run, to bank shoot them off of Diane's shins, onto her feet.

My dog actually must not like the smell of grinners. He will run up to them, and then follow closely behind, until they tree up in a 3’ tall sapling! Once at eye level, without movement, he still doesn’t like em. Coons or anything bigger, god bless that poor varmint!

Exactly.

If I wanted a possum dog I'd get me one of those silent on track cur dogs to catch them on the ground. I could see where that would be useful on properties you're trying to rid of nest raiders.

My dog aint racist - he has caught coons, skunks, snakes, cats, rats, possums, rabbits, birds, UPS delivery - all in the yard. He feels it is his job - to rid the yard of varmits - and he takes it seriously.

My border collie has killed ground hog.and a rat. Had a groundhog in a snare she seemed interested in after I dispatched it it was still in the snare and I wiggled it around and told her to kill the rope. Thinking correctly she would try to kill it like her rope toy when we play. Not long after she ran one up a tree. I knocked it down with a stick it was about 7 ft up. She was on it in a running grab shake jump back Battle for about 20 feet . The ground hog looked like it got her a few times but ultimately it quit moving.

My daughter had one of her breeder feeder rats bight her and she droped it. She ts the dog to get it and crunch it was over and now snake food.

If you point and tell her to get it she will kill it unless it's a cat. She just runs up to them.amd smells them.

I've had both straight English red tick and BMC they both have there place, with coon price suppressed I'd just as well hunt my BMC and kill all the nest robbing varmints, also can use them for squirrel and decoying Coyote's.

Most of our dogs won't bark at them at all.even in the trap

My dog Runt will hunt them out from under buildings andnwheredver they are and.lill them.

He still won't bark at them but he will shake them and.kill them.

He got 3 in one night in the shed. Possums were going everywhere
He had quite a time with them.lol

IF IDIOTS GREW ON TREES THIS PLACE WOULD BE AN ORCHARD !

None of our dogs have ever encountered an opossum, but then our dogs are never left to run loose.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

Earlier, I could hear animals walking in my orchard in my front yard, through the open window. I ran Althea out the side door, into the front yard. She immediately got on a hot trail, at a fast run and then hooked back about 100 degrees, before making about a 70 degree turn back again. I figured 2 trails crossed. I saw eyes set like an opossums, at the base of an apple tree disappear and figured it treed up and found an opposum in the tree.

I called Althea over, thinking she could keep it treed while I grabbed a 22, but she went running past, close to the road around the house the opposite way we entered the yard. Seconds after she ran by, a decent sized cottontail rabbit ran about the way she did.

I went back the way I came to figure out what Thea was doing and to get the 22. When I called her she would run about half way to me and then back to my porch. When I got near the porch, I could see Thea had deposited an adult opposum on the ground nearby. It was very clear she wanted me to open the door, so she could take the opposum in to give to Diane, who was in bed already.

I made Thea leave Diane's present outside, much to Thea's disappointment. Grabbed the 22 and took care of the opossums.

I am positive that if I let Thea take the opposum inside, she would of dumped in on top of Diane in bed.

Our German shepherd pup has a soft mouth. He likes to pick up things and bring them to us unharmed. there is one chicken he seems to really like and has brought over to mywife or daughter several times. she is always unharmed. He also will catch mice if one gets away from my daughter or escapes . Again they are never hurt and he will give them to you when told otherwise he just likes to pack them around.

Glad your down another possum. I hope your wife likes the gifts.
