With the winter we are having I’m thinking about some southern options so I looked into NM but it’s tough getting the info out of the 132 page handbook like most handbooks spring turkey seems like a afterthought. LOL Might look into CO, UT or about any of the western states with a lot of public lands and OTC tags that are not overpriced.

Not looking for specific spots just general public forests that are open to the public hopefully with few people if possible. Any other options welcome 2-3 guys maybe 2 most likely.

PM me if that works for you,

Thanks

Looks complicated might end up going to MO and feed the ticks again if we don't draw a WI tag again.

Im sitting on 3 tags right now-2 for Neb and one for SD. This current storm just puts me into more of a turkey depression. Ive been filling the void by watching “the hunting public” on youtube. A group of young guys who go all over the country hunting public land birds. Shows their screwups too, which is nice. Give it a look.

Most midwestern states are talking about decreasing turkey numbers, my state included. Are there any states where the numbers are on the increase?

SD thinks the same thing but here it’s more of a change in weather patterns. I made 6 trips out to the Black Hills 2 years ago to the high country birds were together through the whole season not interested in much. In those 6 trips I came across 100s of birds but only in bad weather when they were pushed out of cover. Never did I see any GFP personal or Federal workers in those trips in fact I can’t remember ever seeing one in the Hills in the last 40 years while hunting.

They based their decisions on numbers on paper not actual field work it appears. I seen more birds last year then ever before along the river here. WY was talking about a later season now with a opener at the end of April rather than around the first week SD is doing the same. The prairie units will still open in early April.

With the lousy winter we are having I would imagine that will impact the numbers this year but they are tough critters.

Nebraska now has a cap of 10,000 non res licenses and the limit is 2. Prior to this year it was 3 per person and there was no maximum number of licenses.

Thanks

There are literally hundreds of thousands of acres actually millions of acres of public land opportunities in NM. Lincoln National Forest, Gila National Forest are a couple. Trust me, if I can travel to different states and find and kill turkeys, then anyone can.
OnX is your friend. I have the entire US at the palm of my hand. Pick areas and download maps prior to going. I’ve already downloaded about 15 spots in Montana I want to look at this Spring. Timber lands are available and generally only require an online pass that’s cheap. Download areas because you may have no service when you get there. I ran into that in NM using AT&T. My son had Verizon and had no issues. Find an area that has service or even find a place with WiFi and stop in and use their WiFi. I stopped and explained my situation and they gave me their password and let me download what I needed.
I will say this though, for a flat lander, NM was tough, lol!! When compared with the PNW my son said he didn’t care if he ever went back turkey hunting in that State. He said he’d rather walk from Georgia to Washington to kill a turkey than fly to NM to kill one.

When you find turkeys, you find them. Listen early, like before sunrise early and take a coyote howler. They answer that readily. Find water and you’re near turkeys. And it’ll pay to spend a day just scouting before actually hunting. And don’t overdo climbing, altitude sickness is real.

Thanks that might be to much for my friends it sounds like the one gets winded driving down the road but if they back out I might hop in the truck and head that way.

So it’s 2 birds is that on one tag or 2 separate tags at 2X the price, the general tag so units don’t matter for that license?

In WV it is 2 birds per License. In the spring they have to be bearded. You just buy them on Line or Cabelas or any Sporting Good Store. I think there are a lot of them and that Private Farmland seems the best.

God please keep they 19 fallen UBB miners out of trouble up there.

Don’t quote me, but I think we got two tags with the license in NM.
I know I only bought one in Idaho and called in 4 on the last day…just bought a 3 day license, lol.

You're welcome.
2 birds 1 tag sold. You will have 2 carcass tags with that one Spring Turkey purchase.

Fall and Spring are 2 different purchases. If you do Fall archery all Sept abs are unsuccessful you can use that same tag for the "legal weapon" Fall turkey season.
