I have a confession to make. I am 41 years old and have never bought a gun.

My first 4 guns were given to me. My dad gave me his Marlin 60 when I was 10. He bought me a NEF single shot 20 gauge when I was 12. My grandfather let me use his Remington Model 31 20 gauge for 10 years before I moved away, and many years later gifted it to me. My dad bought me a Savage .22 before I moved away... in exchange I gave my half brother the Marlin 60. Once I moved to IL I won 2 gun raffles, both for .22s. Then my husband bought me a .45 colt revolver, and gifted me his old .22 revolver. Last year, my Dad gave me his/my brother's 12 gauge single shot when my brother died.

But I still don't own a centerfire rifle.

I imagine I'll still keep shooting critters with the guns I have been for 40 years but would like to add a deer rifle....aka maybe sometime predator rifle to my collection.

Enter Mississippi's WEIRD rule. You can shoot deer on private land with a rifle a week before rifle season opens if your rifle is .35 caliber or larger.

I'd like to get a gun that complies with that rule.

But I ALSO really want to get a Henry lever action.

I wanted to get a .350 Legend because the Ammo is everywhere here year around.... but Henry only makes it in a single shot.

I see Henry makes a side loading lever action in .35 caliber.

Any thoughts?

The metalic cartrige rifles for muzzleloading have to be breech loading single shot with an exposed hammer 35 cal or larger during the early antlerless only deer season the 10 days before regular rifle season. It is also restricted to private land only. Leased land or someone else's private land that you have permission to hunt on also qualifies as private land. I hunt in Atala county and our club is a real stickler for the rules so they make a point to remind us every year. Not trying to be a smarty but I am reading the 22/23 regs as I am writing this. The rifle you want is an excellent choice but it will not meet the requirement for that season. From December 1 on on private land you can use your weapon of choice on private as long it is a center fire, or you can use a muzzleloader as described or archery equipment.

If you're not too stuck on the Henry, The Marlin 336RC in .35 Rem is deer killer from way back.

there are several bolt action 350 legends available, and there are AR15's everywhere in that chambering. AR's today are cheap because of lots of competition here is a company I deal with some

a rifle kit and a stripped lower and a mag, you have an AR for around 500 bucks.

Sounds like you need a NEF or H and R. Unless you want to spend a lot of money on a replica sharps or something.

Since this rifle is in Brandon MS you could drive over and have a look.

35 is a good caliber but around here it was scarce to find even before Biden got in office. Now it’s practically non existent. Hopefully where you will be will have some on the shelves.

Based on turkn8's description of requirements I would believe a CVA Scout type rifle in 350 legend would qualify. Breech loading, hammer cocked, single shot. Reviews I have watched indicate excellent accuracy.

My brother has the Henry single shot. It’s breech loading and exposed hammer. It should work for your regs. It is a very beautiful gun.

He is having real problems with light primer strikes, though. It has been sent back several times and still misfires with a range of factory ammunition. They seem to be very easy to deal with as far as paying for shipping and trying to fix it by replacing parts and such, but shipping guns back to a company is a real pain no matter what. I would probably avoid that gun based on my experience watching him deal with his lemon. Last time we took it out, a box of Winchester ammo had 4 rounds that misfired. It has been quite frustrating for him.

Primitive Weapons

Weapons legal for use during the Primitive Weapons season are all archery equipment and primitive firearms. "Primitive firearms," for the purpose of hunting deer, are defined as single or double-barreled muzzleloading rifles of at least .38 caliber; OR single shot, breech loading, metallic cartridge rifles (.35 caliber or larger) and replicas, reproductions, or reproductions of those type rifles with an exposed hammer; OR single or double-barreled muzzleloading shotguns, with single ball or slug. All muzzleloading primitive firearms must use black powder or a black powder substitute with percussion caps, #209 shotgun primers, or flintlock ignition. "Blackpowder substitute" is defined as a substance designed, manufactured, and specifically intended to be used as a propellant in muzzleloading or other black powder firearms, excluding modern smokeless powder. Metallic cartridges may be loaded with either black powder or modern smokeless powder (cartridges purchased at sporting goods stores). Telescopic sights are allowed while hunting with any primitive firearm during the primitive weapon seasons. During any open season on deer with primitive weapons after November 30, a person may use any legal weapon of choice on private lands only, if the person is the title owner of the land, the lessee of the hunting rights on the land, a member of a hunting club leasing the hunting rights on the land, or a guest of a person specified above. If the person is required to have a hunting license, the person must have a primitive weapon license, Sportsman's License, or a Lifetime Sportsman's License.

how far are your engagement distances ? if you shoot all your deer say inside 50 yards and can seldom even see farther

not sure what gun your 45 colt revolver is , if your ranges are not far you could do a 45colt Henry rifle one ammo for both guns.

35s are great and 350legend is not a bad caliber , it is decently available , it is designed to get as much performance from the strait wall cartridge state limitations.
the problem with most 35s is they were just never popular enough to make ammo very available

your state law says 35 but you can go larger like 44 or 45

to meet your regs it looks like it has to be a single shot if it is a breech loader so lever gun is out

Thanks everyone. Now that it was pointed out I had read it had to be a single shot but forgot about that, LOL.

Thanks bhugo for the update as a Henry single shot in 350 legend had also been one I was considering. 350 legend ammo is available here are Walmart every single day year around.

Yotetrapper. If you go with the legend.
Word of advice. Buy as much factory ammo as you think you will need for the next 20 or so years. Save all your brass. So, if one day you or someone else decides to handload. Then you have 60% of what you need. The BRASS.
In the meantime. Start buying reloading equipment and componets as you find and can afford.

I personally love the the .358 win, 35 Rem.

Good luck and happy hunting.

If you are only going to have 1 deer rifle, why limit yourself just to pick up an extra week of deer season? If you really want a Henry lever, get one. Plenty of time to kill deer in regular season.

I would go with the legend also. I have had nothing but good reports about it. It seems to be much better than the 35 whelen as far as recoil and the whelen with lighter bullets and fast speeds can be finiky. So light recoil all I've heard is accurate plenty of stopping power and ammo availability sounds like a win win. FWIW I actually built and Encore barrel for the new regs years ago but that was wy before the 350 Legend and it's a whole other story anyway.

So is this just for shooting a deer during y’all’s primitive weapons season? If I was buying a “deer rifle” I’d buy something I could use in any state and kill anything with it. I’m partial to a .308 for many different reasons. I’d buy in bolt and semi-auto. Start buying a gun a year or two guns a year. The best time to buy a gun is when you find one or don’t need one, lol. Just came across a deal from a guy that needed money and got a brand new never fired S/W AR15 for $350 and it had a red dot. And what’s worse is I’ve never seen the gun. My son knows I keep a stash for guns. He looked it over and shot it for the first time and said it was good to go. It also came with 500rds of ammo.
If a .350 is considered a “primitive weapon” then y’all’s lawmakers are as crazy as Californias, lol.

I own two .35 calibre rifles and love them. The first is a H&R single shot in .35 Whelen. I use it for primitive season in Louisiana and Mississippi. It will hammer anything in North America. My second rifle is a old Marlin 336 in .35 Remington. I have killed countless deer and pigs with that gun.

The .350 Legend is pretty weak when it comes to .35 calibre cartridges Both the Whelen and the Remington .35's blow it out of the water. Just food for thought.

I'm a big fan of the .35 Remington but ammo has been almost non-existent for two-plus years and it's stupid expensive when it does become available.
