I’ve read that the 140 grain Sierra gameking does not perform well under 150 yards on deer sized game at magnum velocities. The 140 grain is what I was going to go with in my new rifle. After reading this I wanted to research it some more. Does anyone have any real world experience with this?

Over 40 deer and pronghorn Antelope I've taken using 139 gr 7mm.mag and 140gr
The 140gr were Remington Ultra Bonded
The 139 gr are Hornaday Interlocks

Both performed and perform well -From 6 yds out to 450yds

Bullet placement is Always the most important factor.

I’ve always liked loading the 175 gr sbt Game King myself. It has never not done what is asked of it.

I have used 165 sierra gamekings in 308 for years and really liked them. I got a new Tikka T3x in 7mm rem mag recently and have the 140 grain sierra gameking bullets readily available. I didn’t want to have a bunch loaded and find out they don’t kill sufficiently.

If your rifle will shoot them, a lot of 7mm barrels don't have the twist to stabilize that long and heavy of a bullet. My STW does, but I have only shot them at targets, I use 180 Berger VLDs because they shoot more accurately out of my rifle, but the 175 Game Kings are plenty accurate enough to reach out 4-500 yards. As a general rule Game Kings are a pretty good reliable bullet, but I've never tried something as light as the 140s in my STW.

Grandson shot a deer at 50 yards last oct with my old 270. It was loaded with 130 grain sierra boat tails. bullet went out the other side. deer collapsed. I dont own a 7mm mag. I have heard bad stuff about those bullets myself but I been shooting them out of that 270 for decades and have not seen it

I tried the 120 game kings in 264 Win Mag and they preformed terrible for me. No more Sierras for this guy.

I've had more experience with the 139 gr Hornady interloc bullets than the Serria game kings both are a quality bullet that I wouldn't hesitate to load for one of my rifles .

I've got some Berger bullets I'm trying next ..

I am a huge fan of GKs but sometimes a tougher bullet is a better choice. If I want a tougher bullet I use Nosler Accubonds. Both are accurate bullets. The ABs are definitely tougher but also twice as expensive. With the velocity from a 7 Rem Mag I would use ABs for the margin they provide in the event you hit bone on a close shot. I shoot the 160s from my .280AI.

If you reload might try nosler accubond. I've killed a pile of deer, elk and antelope with the 160 gr

I have always had and used 7 mags for different purposes and the bullets you mention are fine. You almost have to try and find a bad round for a 7, they are really good overall at getting the job done.

I use the 160 GK for elk, loaned my rifle to a guy for an Oryx hunt--broke both front leg bones---he went and bought a new 7mag after that!

I shoot a 7mm mag a lot- Sierra game kings are super accurate bullets but I find they will blow up if pushed too fast-excellent at 7MM-08 velocities but can come apart if pushed too fast at maximum velocities out of a 7mm mag.If you are truly worried about it-do a few gel tests and recover the bullets you chose to try to give you a conclusion. Love Sierra bullets for sure but I have found over the years that they are mostly designed for regular velocity calibers rather than the faster magnums. When I shoot the faster velocity rifles these days-its Nosler Partitions or Barnes TSX bullets for me,sometimes Nosler Accubonds.-even though I am a huge Sierra bullet fan from like 45 plus years of shooting rifles.

Also want to mention that if your shot placement is chest(ribs) almost doesn;t matter what you shoot cause if you miss all the ribs on your way through they will all react the same unless you are shooting hyper velocity stuff.

I shot the 160 grain bullets for a while but finally determined they were throwing the core on impact. Not a good performer on moose. Also found a couple under the skin on the offside of caribou.........not expanded at all.
Switched to Hornady 175's and have never looked back

I've been real pleased with the Barnes TSX bullets in 165 grain for elk in a 300 WSM. Great penetration. For deer I've been real happy with a 150 grain TSX in my 30-06. These bullets mushroom and hold together well.
