My wife had her federal loans forgiven as a public servant and it was quite welcome. Not sure how we are being played as we didn’t vote for him nor will we ever. Understand it has to come from somewhere but at the moment not having to make that payment every month is helping us…….
Good grief. Let me simplify this. Your situation was work for loan payoff. In essence you did pay it off. The program you took advantage of is IN NO WAY what joey and the thousand thieves are suggesting. They are talking about just giving students money for absolutely no reason and no obligation of service. Most of the "forgiveness" will go to master's degree and above. Are you ok giving someone your tax money to get off scott free and having to nothing for it. You and your wife served ten years. Joey just wants to give it to them. See the difference? I paid mine off in 9 years because THAT WAS THE DEAL I SIGNED. It is also the deal EVERYONE ELSE with a student loan signed. It's a contractual obligation. When any politician gives you money, They are giving you TAX MONEY that has been collected from you and everyone else. They don't do this because they care about you. They do this to get your vote with the money they took from you in taxes. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FREE MONEY. Here's some math for you. 143.4 million taxpayers as of 2020. Total proposed cost of "forgiveness"- 400 billion. That means 2,791.00 more will have to be collected from every single tax payer to give someone with a masters degree a $20k credit on their student loan. We were in an income-based program that reduced her loan payment each month for the 10 years she worked. She had to remain working during that 10 years. Yes we paid on the loan, but still owed approx $60k when it was forgiven. Not sure why I’m even arguing this point, just wanted to state that we were able to take advantage of this and it helped our financial situation.

But Tony, IT WASN"T FREE. You and your wife worked for it. You earned it. It was welcome to you and you were willing to trade work for debt. This program is in no way similar to what you did. I don't know why you think it is or felt the need to say getting your loan forgiveness was similar. It wasn't.
This money is going to be taken from you and me and given to someone else free of obligation in hopes of getting a vote.

Did I ever say it's a good thing? No I did not. I said if they are going to waste taxpayers money anyway, (which they are) they may as well help Americans.
It is only in the premise of getting a vote. It has nothing to do with charity or concern for anyone's well being. The money doesn't exist anyway.

Sure wish the monetary system was such that people were held accountable for their actions/in-actions. Money should be a finite thing. The world would be better then.....perhaps.

Several posts are put on here for information and better understanding of subjects. Sounds like some people would have no problem with paying more taxes if they think like you. It's a bull crap program made to sound like free money. If you have information, please post it.
I appreciate someone helping me understand subjects better so I don't look like a freeloader or idiot.

How many times do I have to say it's a bad idea before you get it through your head? I said (for the third time now) IF THEY ARE GOING TO WASTE IT, it should be wasted on Americans.

So you would rather it go to pay free college to someone who signed an obligation? Repay their loan using US tax money rather than send that money to Ukraine?
This is where you appear to be the idiot. It shouldn't go to either one. Again the money doesn't exist.
And if it does suddenly exist, it will be because you and I will be taxed $2791 more.
