You can’t really lump in all western cats as red. Maybe on the coast. I use to catch some very red ones.some with a little red some with a hint of red and some that looked like eastern. I never liked the tag thing cause a lot of buyers would see western tag and you got lots less money. I use to catch a mixed bag even in the same areas.

Trapperbill, you're right of course...some of our western Oregon cats have quite a bit of character to the backs. Most don't though.

Here is a picture of the one from last year When I looked at those string of cats I could see that the third one from the left was the champ. Nice looking fur man!

Prices seem pretty good esp. the eastern cat average. For hearing all the doom and gloom early on the prices on certain western goods are decent. Softness appears in coyote, coon, rats, mink. Not eastern cats. OTC uses that moniker to denote "eastern Oregon" cats, which grade western at FHA.

Wow! Thanks John. That's quite a bit more than what I had heard would be there. I wonder how many beaver and otter were on the tables.

That is a dandy, lope. Best I ever got was $1600 for a cat and that was back in the 2000s when cat prices were way high. That cat crossed the Oregon/Idaho line several times (hound caught) which I didnt really care about since I had a license in both states. I had several cats go top lot at NAFA over the years, including that one, but never when the top lots went for several thousand dollars. Even had an Idaho cat get graded as a Central US cat (ugly cat) one time and go top lot there. Of course that "top lot" was about half what I averaged on my other cats. I've a honey hole in Eastern Oregon I usually go and hunt almost every year that is great for cats, but no cat from there is going to go top lot, not bad cats, but not spectacular either.
Beaverpeeler, I caught a couple 'silver' cats in that Dallas country years ago and a few nice spotted up blue backs, not all the coastal cats are red, but the vast majority are red or mud brown, and your area never produced much for good cats.
Glad to see the prices at the Prineville sale.

I am well aware the difference between eastern oregon and western oregon as fars as cats go. I have personally handled 1000's of Oregon cats.I was using the eastern term referring to Oregon cats eastern vs. western. But if it makes you feel better I can call them eastern oregon cats.

OK, gotcha. Most of the US has a different idea of what constitutes an eastern cat or eastern coyote. I see we were on the same page. My bad.
