CB was the main form of communication here 40 years ago. Then everyone switched to VHF and most still have a VHF set up and on 24-7 for local announcements. Pilots will call ahead when they are landing so passengers know when get to the airport. Weddings and deaths are announced as well as school news, Bingo, river conditions, and communication between two parties.

Some days you will hear the city announce " we are shooting loose dogs today. If you want it tie it up"

I still have small Uniden in my pickup truck. Haven't used it much since cell phones came to be. When was in high school all my buddies had them. Was our cell phone of the day.
Mainly use mine now when caravan tripping with family. My brother and sister still have CBs in their vehicles.

Got my first one beck in the 60's and have had one ever since, use it on long cross country drives but very little locally, do know a lot has changed since the 60's. Yes there are some trash talkers especially on 19 and when the skip is running but also others that don't need their mouths washed out with fels naphtha soap.

Thumbs up on the Galaxy they do get out when tuned and boosted, had a relative that was a radio freak that boosted it to 27 dead keyed

Definitely a lot of ruff language on there. But if you know people that talk on a cb it can be enjoyable.

Any of y’all ex cb folk have a good base tube amps you want to get rid of?

Other than communicating with the stone yard, not much use for it these days. There are apps that mark speed traps, road kill, accidents, broke down vehicles etc.

Never got into CB back in the 70's when it was big, too many clowns on there for me. I got my ham radio license though back in 1994.

Before the big CB explosion in the mid to late '70's it was enjoyable.I was studying for my novice ham license when somebody ask if I ever thought of CB.I'd never heard of it.I got a second hand base station,an old "Citifone SS", an old tube radio, paid for a $20 license and was on the air.I lived in a major downstate city at the time and even there there were times nobody was on any of the 23 channels.Everybody seemed to know everybody, and different clubs had their hang out channel. It was a great time. Then the gas crises hit, speed limits went to 55,and the CB industry exploded.Everybody had one, nobody paid any attention to rules and ethics and it went from enjoyable to miserable. When the kids were still home I put one in my truck, this was in the '90's,and the language was out of control.Wouldn't turn it on anymore when the kids were with me.I still have them ,it was enjoyable when on a long trip to talk to someone instead of listenening to am/fm but got tired of the fighting and cussing all the time.I've ended up upgrading my ham license to Technician and am now going for my General Class.Talking about CB's sure brings back a lot of memories of the '70's.

Those Galaxies were good radios, I ran the President Lincolns, which are really a ham radio that can run CB channels, had one tuned and turned up running 25 watts and the other running 10 with a high input linear attached I could push 300 with. I still have both of those as well as a Midland that has the funny channels. But I can't seem to find replacement mics that will work on those Lincolns. We ran the off channels above or below the regular 40 (not sideband, but different frequency) to avoid all the idiots most of the time. Ran them hunting all the time and running the off channels we didn't have to deal with skip or a bunch of other people just blathering away (not that they wouldn't have thought we were just blathering if they listened to us bsing on the radio while driving). Switched to VHF quite a long time ago, better range, not the people on it, and they make waterproof radios that you can run on a fourwheeler or snowmobile. Still have a CB in each pickup for the log trucks, but running cheap Unidens now because of the mic issue with the Presidents and all I use them for is to avoid trucks. Amazing how many of these truck drivers have absolutely junk radios nowadays that won't work farther than you can see them.

And yes the language and subject matter has gone way downhill on the CBs.

Yea, had one in the early eighties. Most of my buddies had one too. Used them for hunting and camping. We also played a game called rabbit! One person would go hide in their truck, and give clues. Then we would try and find them. We used to pull down our whip to make us seem farther ! A cb got me out of a lot of binds!!!! I had a cobra, with a power mic. And a steel whip. Some of my buddies had theirs tuned and a few had amps. All that is gone now.

Used one forseveral years out in the sticks but eventually switched to HF. Still have my SGC 2020. All digital and very good radio. Problem is no one is on the air any more. It's all cell or sat phones

Hi White, I know for years the FCC allowed Alaskans to have phone privileges in the 40 meter band. Is that what you are referring to when you 'switched to HF'? Heath Kit use to market a series of mono-band radios (20, 40, and 80m) and I always heard they were geared to the Alaskan trade.
Fairly simple radios, they just covered the phone portions of their one band, (no CW portion). You'd have to have a generator out in the woods to make them run though. Still, with a small gen and a simple wire dipole you could probably run the whole state.

Got several. Don't use a one. Back in electronics school I got my CB license.

Didn't use the radio hardly at all back then.
Mostly used it driving the TV service truck I named the orange crate.
