Cancer is such a complex field of study. Many times people who live in the same area, eat the same food, etc etc end up some will get cancer and some not. Genetics is pretty important because certain gene combinations leave you more susceptible.
Free radical damage has a lot to do with it and the longer we live the more free radical damage our cells sustain. But wait! Eating lots of fruits and leafy vegetables , dark chocolate, etc have things called antioxidants in them. Antioxidants move throughout our system and gobble up free radicals as they're being released. I wonder how much cancer could be avoided if people ate the amount of fruits and veggies that the FDA suggests we should.
Among things that produce carcinogens are preservatives in foods, plastic contamination, and of course burnt fats. Pesticides in the food and water we drink are not to be discounted either.
But unfortunately, there is always going to be people that do everything right and get cancer.... and then there's those that smoke, eat poorly, don't exercise, etc etc and live to 100.

Your always going to get the nay sayers..
Being called a cancer survivor myself. I think I agree with you more on the topic than others here. Growing up lead and asbestos were the boogie man that was going to get us all. Now I think the plastic is the next generations boogie man. They just don't have the science caught up yet.
I work in construction at early age and then as a firefighter until cancer took me out. I been exposed to some of everything.. Talking with my doctor after my first round with cancer. He gave me some high number statistics about chance of it reacuring. I recall saying you mean I got better chance of being run over in parking lot leaving here. We both laughed about it.
Six months later I was back in that same office with cancer in same spot as big as first time. That's was life changing then.
I've been considered now cancer free for last 8 years. Not sure how they can say that when the doctor cut cancer off my face last summer. So I say Im only cancer free of the colon cancer. Who knows what else is brewing.
I believe it is a lot of genetic in my case if know family history. Then add age and environment cancer can get anyone.
I wish this gal the best. Keeping her self in shape is certainly going to be a plus for her. The hard part is not letting people drag you down and staying positive.
My best wishes to her in her battle.
