The little I saw of any videos yesterday concerning this mess showed a lot of trenches. How much movement was there in France during World War I when both sides got dug in? Tanks were design during the end of world war I to overcome the meat grinder in France. This war is starting to smell like a war of attrition. Tanks ,theoretically ,can overcome trench warfare.

Speaking of trench warfare,,,,,,

Have you guys seen the clip of the guy belly crawling up/into the uke trench. Then laying waste, single handily???

Not going to post it as it’s graphic

Can’t help but wonder how often that happens on both sides, but never is seen

The whole thing sucks!

It's the constant ebb and flow of technology. Infantry technology, repeating rifles and machine guns rendered mobile cavalry warfare moot in WWI resulting in static trench warfare. The tank broke that stalemate but repeatedly failed early on when used alone and could not by itself win the war. It was Cambrai and the use of tanks in conjuction with infantry and artillery in what is now know as combined arms warfare that ultimately broke through for the allies.

We are facing a similar technology shift today with the prevalence of man portable missile and unmanned drone technology that has given the infantry tank killing capacity.

Ultimately it still boils down to you kill infantry with more infantry. Always has been so. Cavalry can rout infantry once the infantry has broken but to break it you need infantry or artillery.

Also the modern battlefield has moved to the cities and infrastructure and away from the open battlefield.

Tanks still will have a role in a combined arms war but until a counter is found they will be vulnerable.

But until then we are back to trench/attrition warfare.

Insane how each generation of humanity develops new and innovative ways to kill each other.

A Ukrainian youtube channel who do nicely produced videos of AFU groups, this one just came out a few days ago, when it was actually done is not known but it was this winter. The AU guys have a modernized T-64 tank, with a 125 mm smooth bore cannon.

Some observations. The tank commander-- younger guy with big beard-- is almost too big (tall) to be in these older Soviet era built tanks, he wouldn't have fit in the older T-54/55 models because they had 4 guys, the T-64s and T-72s have an auto loader so crew is now just 3 guys. Somewhere in the middle of the interview the commander says any Ukies learning how to use NATO Leopards or Abrams will be brand new tankers, which does make sense in that it doesn't take any experienced crews off the lines but it would take more time to train up new Army guys. Somewhere towards the middle or so of the video, they have incoming Rus artillery fire-- maybe when the little girlie reporter has to crawl under the tank and gets all muddy-- and a shell splinter hits the tank barrel hard enough to put a hole through it. They then have to take the tank back from its ready position to somewhere a good distance in the rear where the barrel can be replaced. The other 2 guys in this tank crew are older, way older than most American tankers. I've seen that several times in some of these videos from the late fall and winter.
