I was referring to gd dmg grade beaver. One buyer bought all the strings at identical prices last June. Not sure if the same happened in this last sale.

March 2023 CatalogThanks for posting that Dirt. First chance I had to peruse the sold catalog. I hope those kinds of numbers keep up for a few auctions.

Wouldn’t a southern pelt be heavier that a northern but have thinner coat? Cuz of the thicker hide?

BP looks like they had LT beaver in section 1, but didn't have any grade REG DGD? Maybe if I was in the LT biness I would chop a couple of holes in each hide.

Why is the leather thicker on southern beaver? All southerners grew thicker leather just to put up with us carpetbaggers. Leastways that's what my Tennessee room-mate once told me.

Yeah, that is pretty much my point in all this. When will the trade push FHA to lot beaver according to how much usable felt they have. Flat early goods just aren't a very good deal for them when intersorted with heavy nap northern goods.

There is no way that the buyers/end users dont know the difference in short vs heavy nap beaver fur.
There is something else going on with this market for them to not acknowledge (with $$) the difference in amount of available felt.
What are they doing with all that beaver leather after the fur is shaved off?

Swampy, what I believe is going on is desperation to get their tally of felt however they can get it. The fact that the felt market is the total beaver market right now (almost) is a relatively new thing. That is my point to the thread...when will they demand sorting to meet their criteria?
As far as the leather goes, my understanding is that when the pelt goes through their machinery the leather is actually cut into small unusable strips. They haven't really figured out any use for it.

What are they doing with all that beaver weather after the fur is shaved off? When markets are hot, grading goes out the window. Once demand settles, buyers will get pickier. Right now, they are buying anything that looks like a beaver.

Not sure, just read that in the giant fur bearer management book I got. Maybe cuz they get to fool around all year, not cooped up during the winter?
