I suppose some of you are getting ready to get out & plant trees. Last year I think I planted late April but I should have been out sooner if I remember right. I ordered from 4 different nurseries so I'm at the mercy of when they ship. I also plan on transplanting some seedlings though, from where there's excess on 1 part of my property to another part where trees are lacking, though I am unsure when to start doing that

I hope we don't run into an issue like last year--it seems like I couldn't irrigate enough

I have a lot of spruce that are coming up in our rock gardens. So my job this spring will be digging them up for transplanting. Will probably order a few others also. Just waiting for the snow to melt.

Yep!! Going to plant more this spring also and looking forward to it. I believe mine came end of April as well and will be getting ready for it in the next few weeks. Planting will be done on part of the new addition of land to the ranch.

I'm surprised your nursery delivers them already

Started working on my 1000 today…only got 300 spruce in the ground today. Hand planting takes time and muscles I don’t use very often!

if your going to transplant the best time is late fall, about a week or two before frost starts.

They came early this year, I should’ve had them
delivered to Hayward but I had trees to plant in SE also. I got 300 in yesterday and it’s supposed to get to 80 today. I have 500 American Plums to plant today- getting around on the ATV has been challenging.

I planted 1100 this weekend by hand with the kids. Swamp oak and tamarack that I picked up from DNR on Friday.

I had to work around some high water and a little frost in places, but otherwise went pretty smoothly. Weather was perfect. I did manage to find some poison sumac or something and realized it way too late so dealing with those repercussions.

That said, I ordered some bigger chestnut and norway spruce trees from a different nursery that I am waiting to be dug. I also want to plant a truckload of willow cuttings this weekend, but not sure I will have the time.

My first order arrives tomorrow, from Chief River. This will be interesting as I've never planted trees in snow before.

Thanks.
I'm not sure how to predict when the frost starts.
If planting in the fall, do you have issues with frost heaving?

The trees I planted 2 weeks ago were from Chief River. I was surprised how fast they came.

I suppose mine will show up next week. We haven't had any snow for about 3 weeks now and ground is frost free. I was digging holes a month ago so I'm ready for the ones I'm getting.

Good luck on planting and maybe some updates on your planting with pictures.

Planting in snow is fun- just wiggle your foot around and plant 1,000 trees.
All kidding aside, I normally don't count on luck when planting anything weather wise but last week with those few days in the 80's saved me from digging through snow- I only had a handful where the snow created problems earlier in the week.

The North slopes really held a lot of snow and the transitions between lowland & highland- had temp swings of 30 degrees- you can see where the culvert marked the gradient temperature change.

Good Luck- have fun!

This is probably why it's important to plant certain types of trees in certain strategic parts of a property

The snow wasn't a challenge for me tonight but what was a challenge was dealing with all the downed debris from the two epic storms we had this winter.

The damp, cool conditions yesterday and today made it nice for transplanting trees. I didn't even water them. I did use root gel but it was left over from last year and it looked like water, not gel.

Are any of you still planting trees now that June (Summer) is approaching?
