As mentioned the amount to spend should be determined by how much you are going to use it, if only going to look for a single ring don't spend more than absolutely necessary, check a pawn shop for a used detector, i.e. gold bug 2,

My friend bought his minelab several years ago and paid $1200 for it. He has paid for it several times over now. Lots of places up here to hunt.

Gold and silver. He hunts along creeks and stretches of the old Alaska Highway. The coins the military boys that originally built the highway were carrying were silver. He said he almost always finds coins on every outing. He even found one of those hollow Chinese coins that looks like a lifesaver. It was the second one ever found here.

Most companies will have package deals, that include a Pointer. I personally use the MinelabXterra 705, I think it was the predecessor to the Equinox models.

Several things to consider first:

1. What's your top end budget?
2. Do you plan on REALLY using it as a serious "hobby", or will it get put in the closet after a few times out?
3. What will you be using it to find, general or specific items?
4. Do you plan on doing research and getting permission to "hunt" areas local or otherwise?

There's a lot to think about before spending any amount of money in this hobby and there's more to buy than just a detector :-)

Proud owner of:

Minelab Excal II - Land & Water - waterproof to 200 feet
Minelab E-Trac - Land - All phases
Whites V3i - Land - All phases
Whites Coinmaster Pro - Land - All phases
Tesoro Silver Umax - Land - All phases
Troy Shadow X2 - land - All phases

Prices vary. . . and then there are all the "accessories" . . .

:-)

What?
No recommendation for Hoover Boys YouTube channel????

I don't want to seem like a jerk, but people that post, show, tell their finds to the media, friends, etc. are stupid. I personally know several MD'ers who were criminally charged, fined, and lost their "finds" through legal proceedings against them for claims of theft, the Antiquities Act, and other's claiming to having family's prior possession. A wise rule to go by is Search, Seek, Shovel, and SHUT UP!"

I knew an antique bottle collector like that a LONG time ago.
He was PROUD of getting arrested practicing his craft!

Kellyco is good. Bought a Minelab there in person , Orlando FL.
Recommend.

I have bought several detectors from them as well. Good company to do business with.

Anybody own an Equinox 600? I currently have my Minelab Excalibur and a Fisher Aquanaut. The Excalibur has paid for itself, but I'm hearing good things about the Equnox 600 & 800.

A guy in Maryland bought an old home from the descendants after the parents died. He was remodeling the attic and discovered $100,000 in old 1920's "big dollar bills". He couldn't wait to get his new found wealth and name in the local paper. He did . . . the surviving family members filed a lawsuit claiming the money had belonged to the parents and took him to court, won the suit, got all the money, and he had to pay his lawyers and court fees. "SSSS" grin
