Aside from a long distance skunky call lure, what other ingredients are folks using in a fisher lure? I'm thinking a castor base, but what other additives to get a fisher working sets consistently in the early part of the season? Mink glands? Tonquin?

Paul Grimshaws Fisher lure was top notch...if you can find some . Maybe Toby Edwards has a closet full.

I take a beaver hind quartah and rub it up and down the pole set....leaving little chunks of fat and meat ,greasing up the up pole.

Then beaver for bait with a dab of beaver lure on the bait..

Followed buy that petroleum jelly with pure quill mixed in it.

When I had Grimshaw fisher lure....a few drops went on the base of the pole.

Seen Bob Noonan also add some squirted trails of fish oil ( about a 15-20 foot squirt from the base of the pole in a couple different directions.

But no clue what was in the lure

Fish oil and castor, for late fall and early winter. If you dont have any fish oil buy a bunch of cans of cheap sardines. If you get hungry on the line you can eat some of your bait.
In winter when it gets 30-40 below a half a beaver carcass is all you need-forget about lure when it gets cold.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Fishers are an opportunistic hunter/scavenger. They prey on a wide variety of animals including hares, grouse, squirrels, birds and their eggs, berries, mice and voles and CARRION. Thus, many types of lure will attract them. Venison, moose and beaver are excellent bait for them with beaver being my preference along with a beaver castor/anise lure.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

I believe the question is about lure, not bait. That said I agree with much of what Nessmuck said, however I disagree with his comment about mixing skunk pure quill in petroleum jelly. Many fisher trappers use that mix, but the negative is that mix will harden over and needs to be broken when checking traps.Without question skunk odor is vital, but another base needs to be found for it.
Every trapper has their own idea what to use. I will tell you what not to use. I tried using Anise and had all kinds of trouble with black bears. Years ago we would catch smelt and rot them down over the summer, and pour that up and down the poles.Same problem with the bears.
I definately use skunk mix. I also like using beaver oil sack oil, but not mixed with anything.I like mink musk
There are some great fisher lures on the market and a lot of poor ones used only to trap trappers. I choose not to name them.

I also agree with Boco's suggestion about using sardines. I use them sometimes as bait, fisher love them, I like the ones packed in oil.
Most of the amish stores carry a lot of flavors that you might experiment in early season.

Skunk and beaver go together like peanut butter and jelly.
