Getting better but not perfect.

[Linked Image]

I gave up on the wet towel soak and now do the scraping after the final wash once it comes out of the tan. Still pretty labor involved. I noticed the pros do it on a board more verticl than my fleshing beam so ai may make that adjustment in the future.

How are you tanning them?
I've used TruBond on most stuff with decent results, but bigger beaver coming out STIFF.
Thought of making a diy shaver/ thinner but then thought, nah...

Hobbie, of course this is exactly the place to show your work. I was interested, is why I looked to begin with.

I thought you were undertaking the task of what Tubari does, plucking guard hair to leave that luxurious fluff underneath . I really like that process.

Never mind Boco. He loves to tease. He wants to see your results as much as anyone.

Please continue !

Alum tan. They come out soft but you have to thin them. I remove the guard hair with the dull side of the fleshing knife. It does alright, maybe better when I adjust the beam more vertical. I’ll let you know how it goes.

The one pictured is still damp and I will clean up what guard hairs didn’t fall to the fleshing knife.

Sharon, I do take the guard hair off to get to the soft fur underneath. I have not sheared any though. I like that 70’s “shag carpet” look. lol

I use a secret method of my own invention to pluck furs.
I was thinking of getting a patent on it.

Boco, that's exactly what Tubari does. The secret stays in the family and the few who are trained to do that, all by hand, never give out just how they do it. They've made tons of money from their excellent work. My beaver hides for my coat was all done by Tubari. It is absolutely wonderful. Everyone wants to feel the softness of that underfur .

Seems like there is market and need for such work...if the technique can be developed to the perfection of Tubari.

Sometimes the comments on this site may seem like an argument, but if we were sitting by a campfire, everyone would burst out laughing.
The beaver I tanned with Trubond last spring weren’t stiff, not super soft either. I used a palm sander to break it towards the end.

Are you putting anything on the beaver when you scrape of the long hairs? It seems some kind of chalky material is used from an old video I watched.
