Went to Tractor Supply for dog food. Ended up getting 5 - 5 qt. Jugs of traveler oil 10w30 for $4.99 each. Castrol 5w20, 4- 5 qt. Jugs for $9.99 each. Might go back tomorrow and get greedy and buy all they have. Would you stock up if you could? Sarge

Actually it does. Depending on how it is stored , approximately 5 years.

In the ground for millions of years but goes bad in 5 on the shelf... ok... Crude oil in the ground for millions of years away from temp extremes , UV , oxygen and water , one thing. Refined motor oil exposed to all of the above , totally different thing. Ever notice you should change your oil once a year even if the vehicle only goes less than a thousand miles in a year ? Oil breaks down quickly especially in a crankcase. A quick search online will give you the information you need. I used to think oil lasted forever too , not so.

Actually it does. Depending on how it is stored , approximately 5 years. Had some Castrol 40W that was still in the quarts with metal tops you have to punture. THINK it was from 1970s, ot at least, has been sitting there since then, lol. Used it in tractor, was fine! Or course, tractor is a '56, so....

How does stored motor oil become exposed to extreme temps, uv, oxygen and water? Most people store their oil in a garage. The temp can swing as much as 50 degrees in a single day. Many days and many cycles of temp going up and down as opposed to being underground where temp stays very consistent. There is zero UV underground. Even with an opaque plastic bottle some UV will get exposed to the contents. Ever notice you never see oil in clear bottles ? Even in a sealed container oxygen will get in , plus who knows exactly what additives have been added to refined motor oil that may have oxygen or other chemicals that cause degradation. Crude oil has none of these things. Water vapor is always present in our atmosphere. This is one of the reasons why a lot of oil containers have a foil seal. If there is any water underground with oil , it seperates naturally. Studies have been done on landfills. You can dig down and find edible food that is 50 years old. No UV , oxygen , water and stable temperature does some amazing preservation of things.

To the OP , please do not take my comments on this thread negatively. I think you buying oil on the cheap is a good thing to a point. Buy only as much as you think you can use in a reasonable amount of time.
Years ago , when oil was about a dollar a quart there was a grand opening of a Advance Auto near me. As part of their grand opening they had a special where you could buy oil for for 37 cents a quart for a period of about 2 weeks. I went on a buying frenzy getting as much as I could. They limited you to a case per customer. I went there many times and brought friends to buy cases for me too. I had gotten about a dozen cases of 10w30 and 10w40 and was planning on getting more until an older friend of mine who was a mechanic and he told me of how oil doesn't last forever. It was a good bit of knowledge that I learned. Plus oil requirements have changed a lot over the years. Perfectly stored oil from 20 years ago does not meet the specs for modern engines. Weights of oils have changed quite a bit too. 30 years ago you almost never heard of a car needing 5w20 or 0w17 weight oils.
