Lazarus Bacon BaitI was going to attempt to make the bait linked above, but I’m having a hard time coming up with cheap bacon or bacon pieces locally. Does anyone here order theirs online? I know it’s a long shot but, I’m holding out some hope.

That’s what I’m afraid of, bacon off the shelf is $6.00 a pound. That’s some expensive bait.
We have a butcher about an hour away, that might be my best bet.
Thanks for the reply.

The butcher does it all, he processed our pigs and cows for many years. He processed my moose last year. He’s a pretty good resource but, he about an hour a way, Walmart is about an hour too. The wife saves all the bacon grease, she might take one of my fingers if I took her grease. I’ve got some moose stew meat and some lure left from last season. I think for now I’m going to order some Backbreaker and some Coyote #1 Water trapping just opened yesterday so, I’ll get back to making some lure when I’ve got all the ingredients on hand.

You could make your own from Boston butts. The are often on sale, and make fine eats. You could use it for bait if you wanted to. Google buck board bacon.

Many grocery stores here have 24 oz packages of cubed bacon in bacon fat. I’d guess it’s 50/50 cubes to fat and the cubes are small. The last time I bought it was a year ago—it’s still sitting in my freezer. As I recall, it was around $5 per package. When they have it, it’s in the refrigerator case next to the $6 for 12 oz of bacon strips.

Trappers always make me laugh........Spend $35,000 on a pickup, $15 - $30 each on traps, a couple thousand $$$ more on gizmo's and gadgets to make sets.....and then scrimp and scrounge on bait and lure. I think ole Lazarus factored in how tight fisted some trappers are before he shared his recipe. Compared to the Tracy Truman version he cut back on the amount of honey and castor he uses. I like the Lazarus version better because it works equally well as the other with less added enhancement. And yes this bait is worth the time and every penny spent to make it, even if bacon were $10 a pound

Mr slkyplainscoyoye, I bought and watched Tracy Truman's excellent grey fox trapping video and swore the original mix he had like 6 ounces of castor and a pint of honey..........HOLD EVERYTHING!!!!!!!! just checked in one of my notebooks.....whole different formula for a fox bait he makes using Jack Maceral or Salmon with 6 oz. castor and some other ingredients........thats a good bait too........anyway I've made and used both with very good results........both are well worth the time any money to make.

Mr Milkcrate I have caught red fox, gray fox, raccoon, fisher and coyote. Not many bobcats around here anymore but I'm confident that it would be very good for them too.
