for the most part I've hung up my traps years ago, I still occasionally will live trap a troublesome Woodchuck as needed in a live trap. Thats been it for the last several years.
I haven't hunted in the last year or two, just don't have the interest.
This is the first spring I haven't gone fishing, didn't even buy a license.
I just have other things that keep me busy and I'd rather be doing.
Even sold most of my rod/reels this spring as I haven't used most of them for several years.

I spend alot of time outdoors cutting firewood, making lumber and doing ecological restoration work.

Not as much as I used to. But I always try to trap at least a little every season, even when prices are in the toilet.

Just give me one thing, that I can hold on to. To believe in this livin' is just a hard way to go.

I trap every year. I love it!! I love putting up $2.00 coons. I guess I do. That’s what I’ve averaged the last three years. And yet I can’t wait to catch’em again this year. LOL

Had to give it up. Surgeon replaced a bad knee with a worse one, then six years later, did it again.

Some years back I found an essay in the folks attic I had written in the first grade. I went something like this: "There are rats in the barn. I tired to catch a rat and couldn't catch it. Grandpa said try Limburger cheese. Used Limburger cheese. Caught the rat. The end".

Four years later (and living in Costa Rica for a year with the family) I had a girlfriend that lived in the barrio in a shack with dirt floors. Mice were often seen scurrying around under the table. The next time I came calling I brought a mouse trap I had bought and got to watch the catches. Boy how I loved a girl that has critters to trap in her house!

I'm just shy of 66 right now and caught 175 beaver 23 otter and 15 bobcats last winter so I'm still at it and guess I can lay claim to roughly 60 years laying steel! grin

This is me circa my early barn rat trapping days:

Haven't missed a season since 1970. I have put up some good numbers many years. Now age is creeping up I don't care so much about numbers but just more of getting out and trapping.

Trapped very hard every year since 1972. Last year was the first year I didn't longline for something. Did a pile of nuisance beaver last fall. And a bunch this spring.

Still trap every year. Not after it like I was when reds were $40+ . Now it’s more nuisance stuff, or if a farmer or landowner has an issue I’ll go take care of it. Did some Fox this year. Muskrats in waterfowl impoundments for a friend. Otter in a bass pond, and while I was on that property did fox and muskrats too. Overall a fun year, not big numbers but carried the kids along as much as I could.

Trapped every year for the last 24 seasons, and was lucky enough to ride along with a good mentor ( Lewis Quarles and Scott VanEss) before I started on my own.

Started at a month old, went with dad into high school. Got a German Shorthair and bird hunting ruled my life for the next 12 years. Still rode with the old man a couple times a year. Had a couple lab mixes after and the bird hunting wasnt the same. At about 27, got going pretty good into trapping. Moved to a craphole city and the driving became a bit far so would run hard for coon for a week while taking vacation. Moved out of the craphole and started dabling in the coyotes last few years. Only thing I trapped this year was a skunk that was in my garage. Dont put up fur and have no desire to. No sense in catching critters that I cant sell. Do miss it though. Went and got a shorthair pup this year. Figured I need to do this while my legs still work. MS has taken some steps from me and I can only imagine itll take more. Nothing like walking up to a quivering dog locked up on a rooster.

I trap every year and enjoy it greatly. Hope I can do it even more when I retire in six years. No big numbers but enough to keep the fire going.
