Just back from the Armadillo 500 down in Missouri unbelievable the amount of road killed grease balls with their little feet sticking up in the air like in a cartoon. I wonder how much that has to do with the drop in Turkey numbers it was just thick with them. Mostly south of I-70 outnumbering everything else.

We did see coons in the mornings when we hunted turkeys earlier so still a lot of coons running around.

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

I'm sure they root a nest or two up but I'll guarantee that possums & coons will destroy and eat more eggs & chicks than armadillo's ever will. We are overrun with both here, I do my part but if I never see another possum it will be to soon.

I ask all landowners if armadillos are on the pay list. I very rarely catch one in a foothold, but do in cage traps and see them occasionally when riding their property. So far every single one has said kill’em all.

As far as I know, (disclaimer) all armadillos eat are grubs. If anyone knows different, please educate me. And they're protected, unless one is coming for you I guess. Missouri Conservation says unless they specifically say an animal can be taken, it is protected. Armadillo, copperheads, cottonmouth, we can't legally kill them.
We got lots of them here is SW MO and I see them all the time. Turks are down here too. I blame it on predators. Coons, possums and skunks. And coyotes of course.
I need to start trapping again.

I would think maybe if they eat eggs I'd catch one once in awhile in a coyote set. One of my two baits is egg base yet I've never caught one. Every time I see one it's out in the field digging for grubs.

They don't have any predators, as far as I know. I see them in my garden and here around the house. I don't guess they hibernate either. One was here around the place all last winter. You can walk right up to them and kick them and they will just grunt and either run off or roll up in a ball like a sow bug.
Boy a 30 30 will tear them up. Sounds like the flat of a boat paddle hitting the water when it hits them. (Of course, heard that story from a friend).

Georgia takes the opposite approach. They list all native species by law and if it ain't on that list then no law applies.

Starlings, pigeons, house sparrows, armadillos are fair game. Feral swine only have rules on transport, nothing moves alive without USDA permit which you won't get, and method of take in regards to related hunting method or season.

There was study just done by missouri department of conservation on turkey nests and mortality. Putnam co,mo. And a southern mo. Area. 80% of nests failed due to predation and of those 50% were predated by raccoons. Should be no surprise to anyone who is in tune with ground nesting game and song birds.

Bottom line is there needs to be more native warm season grasses and more brooding rearing habitat (weedy/forbes) areas. And then intense nest predator removal as close to or thru nesting season.

I drove around the west with two possums tied to the fenders, no one in New Mexico had seen one----so we moved here!

Armadillos are mostly turkey nest disturbers......not nest predators. Their presence in turkey habitat is not much of a limiting factor.

Here in Georgia, they are not protected by law. Also, hundreds of thousands are killed daily on our highways by vehicle tires.

And those rascals sound just like a deer walking thru the late afternoon autumn woods. Have caused me to clip the release on the bowstring or push the safety off the rifle a many a time....

Some years back I trapped in MO a bit. Possum numbers were VERY high.

Turkey population here is declining with a growth in coon populations. I know bounty is not popular but I would like to see one on coon skunks and possums with no closed season. It will only take about 15 minutes to change back if population decline merits it.

here is what wiki says about armadillos

Quote
The diets of different armadillo species vary, but consist mainly of insects, grubs, and other invertebrates. Some species, however, feed almost entirely on ants and termite

As Swamp said, they don’t seek out nest or eggs, but if one is in their path when they’re rooting, they will destroy it. They’ll also dig holes under fences which other predators can enlarge and use.

I grew up around armadillos, chased em, shot em, ran over em, just harassed them in every way I could think of basically my entire life. Never did I ever see one roll up in a ball. Has anyone else seen one roll up in a ball?

Twice I have seen them in Keokuk IA. When I went to FL in early spring I saw more from FL to MS to TX than the rest of my life combined. I bet I saw an easy 500 on the road.

Never seen one roll up in a ball. But I've seen em jump straight up about 2 feet high and hit the ground running in 4x4 high range. Also found out it is IMPOSSIBLE to pull one out of a burrow by the tail. His tail will pull off before his feet slide backwards.
