Way to go u guys, can you tell any taste difference over the grey's compared to the fox? Which do you prefer to hunt and to eat? I prefer the young grey's. Those big foxs with nuts the size of golf balls are best left to a pressure cooker!

Good deal Clayton. Next you'll have him after them turkey birds Clay. John, I told him he had to kill 100 squirrels before he could kill a deer or turkey lol.

Awesome! I absolutely agree, kids should start out hunting squirrels and rabbits. It will absolutely make them a better woodsman. It's a pity today that so many kids 6-10 years old have shot several deer and turkeys which they are eager to tell you about but when you ask them how many squirrels and rabbits they shot last year they just give you a blank stare.
I know the legal limit is now 10, but I still consider a limit 6, cause after I've peeled that many it's enough for me!
Congrats clay I’m the total opposite lol. I’d rather skin squirrels than any other game.

Nice! Did y’all find a mulberry tree? I own 80 acres of timber. Pin oak/hickory/pecan. I’ve got 2 mulberry trees on the entire place. One is 3 inches in girth and the other is dead lol. I love hunting them in mulberries, but we found these predominantly foraging on the ground.

Love the pics and you taking your grandson out. I agree with all the others that every kid should start with hunting squirrels.
I have a question though about a spring squirrel season. We have one here in MS too. Never had that anywhere before moving here. But, at this time of the year, aren't the trees filled with the YOY?

Those YOY make for the best frying squirrels. Big portion of the fall squirrels have become dumpling quality. Have a couple grandkids that are about ready, can't wait to take them.

The percentage of yoy varies some year to year in the spring. I’ve seen it run 70 percent young ones and I’ve seen it run 20 percent young. A hard, late winter here spells less young this early, and typically lower numbers overall. I hunt quite a bit from now until the heat kicks in. Usually by the last part of June I quit until early August when they start cutting hickory nuts, then I really pour it on them. I’ll kill 100 or so early most years. I prefer lots of yoy in the bag each day.

I guess if I could have a perfect limit, it would be 10 young fox squirrels. They’ve got more meat on them than a grey lol. Around these parts, if you kill a lot of squirrels, it will run 80 percent greys.

Never hunted in the Spring but NC has just granted us a season. Since trees are full of leaves and no nuts or acorns, where do you set up, or do you creep? I do what I call still hunt this time of year. Quietly slip through the woods from tree to tree, watching for a bouncing limb, listening for a barking squirrel or claws on bark etc.

I've found Fox Squirrels aren't commonly found in the deep woods, more of an edge cover animal, along roads, pasture and open crop fields.

I’m a firm believer in starting them on squirrels. Teaches them to use eyes and ears and so many stalking and woodsman skills. He’s definitely my best potential outa 4 grandkids lol. Using your eyes ears and sometimes your noses are valuable skills that results in being a successful hunter Plus it is a skill that can not always be learned but devoloping patience to stay set up in what you know is a good spot is better than running over the countryside always hoping to find a better spot . GREAT RUGER 77=22 YOU HAVE
