I laid a lot of track in the mines in the 1970’s. We were hauling coal out in cars…10 ton and 25 ton cars. Main line haulage was 80 pound rail ( 80 pounds per yard ). Section track was 60 pound rail, supply tracks, 40 pound rail. We used armored ties, ( no spikes ) ,they had metal lugs that secured the rails to the ties. Only place you drove spikes were when you were laying out a switch. Metallurgical slag from steel mills was used as ballast for the track. Rails were 33.33 feet long, everything was done by hand.

Our gang laid some of the first continuous rail in SW Pa back in the early 70's.

I would like to see how many snowflakes could handle one day on a track crew like that today.

So you got an early start on your white privilege. Some guys have all the luck.

I guess you are right Osky. I was a pampered young man back in those days. Mom and dad had good upbringing. They just passed it along. smile
