I don't know about Canada, but most of the reason for catastrophic wildfires in the west is due to too good of wildfire suppression for the past 100 years. Fires were a natural and recurring thing all across the west in the past. Just look at pictures taken during the late 1800's of places such as the Black Hills, or anywhere else in the west. There was way less forest land back then than now. We now have millions of acres of kindling just waiting for a spark.

In many northern areas there are no access routes so when fires are burning for miles it is extremely difficult to keep them under control...to the best of my knowledge, we have not lost any firefighters but many are pushing the limits to protect communities.

No doubts, we need to re-think how we manage our natural resources.
