In the late seventies through the eighties, my family used to go to a lot of Iranian picnics and social gatherings. Most of the people at the events were Kurdish, but there were a fair number of Persians from Iran too. Hossein went to several of the events. I wasn't a fan of wrestling, but my next youngest brother was huge wrestling fan. I remember Hossein would hold his arms in a muscle man pose and let the kids hang off him, including my brother. The timing of his entrance into big time wrestling during the US/Iran hostage thing. Think it was Undertaker who said if you’ve never been stabbed, you’re not a hard core heel. Think he was stabbed twice and piles of death threats of course. Heck of a wrestler!

Iron sheik was actually a very skilled athlete… and was actually pretty dang strong. I had read somewhere that he was actually very good freinds with the Shaw of Iran before it all went upside down. Yep. Until his wrestling trainer died suddenly of “natural causes” after he spoke out against the regime. Then he knew it was time to get out while he still could. Lived the American dream actually. Stuffed his nose full of coke for a bit, cleaned up and looked in good shape in the documentary.
