Good evening trappers and lurkers. Lol. My case of belisle 280’s came in today. Definitely going to get more of these ones. I’ve been a big fan of the 8” savageau but these belisle’s look like they’re going to be my new favourites for wolverine. Going to make some boxes and add some 3/32 7x7 for anchoring later on if I can drag myself off the couch. Hottest summer I’ve very seen. Takes a lot of energy out of a northerner especially combined with our extreme mosquitoes. Come on fall time. Field work has been exhausting lately. Watching world war z with Bobby and Morgan first. Charlotte is in aklavik with my parents. Have a good evening.

Makes sense that I would like them. They’re just a bigger version of the 120 super x which has been my favorite 120 ever since I first used them

I still think Ryan would have been better off with 330s just on the off chance that a wolf decided to stick his head in there. I might aswell keep complaining about it that way when Ryan or somebody else catches a wolf in a 280 they can rub my nose in it.

You never know what an animal supposed to be smart as wolf will do. Had a big healthy dog one in a bear foot snare in late Sept one time. Go figure caught in something as obvious as a bear foot snare in a cubby. Managed to let it go.

Another time only about 5 years ago here one was found dead at the bottom of an outhouse behind of the guys country camps. There was one frozen turd on it before some one noticed it. It was dead and froze solid mid winter. Know the guy quite well as he lives same little town as me. He could not find anyone to skin it so the knocked the frozen dump off it himself and cleaned it up. Turned out fine.

I get what youre saying but in all your years of trapping you got how many in 330s? I think 2?

I caught a wolf in a #3 once but im not going to start setting #3's for wolves any time soon. Besides I have LOTTTTS of 330's, I just want these 280's for wolverine specific locations. You Savvy? Ill try set a few 330 magnums this winter in the wolfiest of locations just for your curiosity. Ill call it "The Ian project"

Your right it's none of my business really. Just can't get interested in how much money that my pillow guy makes or does not make. Amazing that if Jan 6 succeeded his would have been the plan for the martial law that followed.

I would give the 280’s a run. They are a good size for a neck/front of the shoulder strike. Are you thinking natural cubbies, milk crates, buckets? Milk crates and 280’s are what that kid from Alberta was killing wolverines in back about 8-10 years ago in his posts. I forget his handle, but he used the 280’s very effectively for wolverine.

I am fond of natural cubbies of limbs, sticks, and natural backing. The plastic sets of milk crates and buckets haven’t worked for me, but others who trap locally have had success with them.

Ask Sam about the 280 there muskrat. Best for wolverine he said but 330’s would be more likely for that few times in a lifetime chance at a wolf willing to stick his head in. Natural cubby would be best bet IMO. Tree roots come to mind. I’ve never had any luck with milk crates Mike. I make boxes to fit every size trap from 120-330. Lots of different measurements amongst brands but I keep tracks of all the different size boxes in my inventory. I like natural cubby’s too.

1 of five wolverines i caught with the 8” savageau last season. Drops them them fast with a single neck strike. I bend the triggers into the box so it’s fires when the head is positioned right but I haven’t straightened them yet since the last catch so they’re bent in a little more than they should be in the picture above. These 8” traps are seriously fast, and small enough to prevent the wolverines whole body from entering the box so it a consistent neck strike. I have nothing against 330’s and use them all the time but these smaller ones sure have a place on my trapline. Picked up quite a few marten in the sav these past couple years. Foxes too. I set one of the 280s and snapped it and to me it’s a little faster than the sav.

My 1 wolverine in a 330 last season. Bridger in a natural cubby.

Very interesting Ryan it's always good to keep one's options open to continue to catch what's available along a trap line which you're very good at with Bobbie learning as you both go a great legacy of knowledge of the land and it's animals on how to utilise them as a natural resource !

I remember ordering a batch of 280 one year. I was really excited about some set I saw on TV or something.. So somewhere I have a bunch of them. Il try and remember what set that was I think it might have been that cubby cut into a tree set from Paul Trepis. Could not find big enough trees even for 280. Maybe if I set a line along the coast I can find some big drift logs and use them

It’s been on my mind for a while to switch back to a gas engine.first thing in the morning at work the other day while the coffee started doing its magic i searched for a good deal like I often do before getting busy and that morning I found it. Clicked on the contact dealer button and had a good slurp of the first pot of the day at the research institute. The Same guy makes the first pot every day at work and he’s got it perfected. Few minutes later the Phone rang and Jill asked if there was anything she could assist me with to having me sitting in this brand new 2023…and I guess you see what I’m getting at here by now? I cleared my throat and said “yes Jill. Yes there is”” I’ll save $.58 cents per litre $2.08 per gallon. Plus I had good equity on the f350 that brought payments down enough where the deal made sense. Ill miss my big truck but I won’t miss those $120 for a quarter tank day. Now I can start looking for an older model diesel for a deal that can’t be turned down. The trapping bug has started brewing and it’s still only July. Got to hunt first. Nights are getting dimmer by the day now. Long drive to Whitehorse tomorrow to meet the driver that’s coming up from the Edmonton to meet and swap trucks. Lots going on but that’s always good.
