Finished up the hat this morning, installed the lining and tie straps. The tie straps are removeable and if they breal can be easily changed out.The beads can be removed from the tie straps also.
A few pics of the finished hat showing lining, snap tab for tail, etc.

Got my brain going now,I might make one with snap tabs all over the hat, then buy up a bunch of coontails and snap about a dozen all over the hat around the skirt, half way up all around, and a few at the top.see what that looks like.

Both,
Sew the hat with the bonis machine, and sew the lining by hand, and finish (install lining) by hand.

Perfect, Boco.

You have the grain of fur going in just the correct directions. What I really like too, is the dark dorsal line along the top middle to the crown. Great way to show off the beauty in colour tones in fur.

That's exactly how I had Temple use my marten skins, the dark dorsal lines in the center of the panels and flaps.

Very nice lining too. Good colour to match a silver coon hide.

I like the beads on the ties too.

Thanks all,Hope my post encourages some people to try their hand at fur sewing. There are simple designs and instructions available on the net.Maybe i will show a real easy one later.
The 4 bead colours have significance to native people-hope no one calls me out for "cultural appropriation" lol.
The first fur hats I made for my own use many years ago,to keep warm on the trapline, were designed from hardhat liners I took apart and tweaked for use with fur.

I noticed the bead colors right off the bat. Figured you were just making what your customers wanted. Good on you for doing that. Looking forward to more projects.

I'm asking for a friend. He might need one made from an otter. I don't know how big weasels get...

Whippin up another coonskin hat.
Same type of coat coon, only this is the simplest of all hat patterns that anyone can make.
I think its called the davy crockett patern.
Simple 3 piece pattern-2 sides and a top.
If you sew by hand it doesnt take long to sew.

Use the second pattern, very easy to draw up with a cloth tape to measure kids head, circumfrence around forehead and just above ears-largest part of the head, and distance from above the eyebrows to straightedge along top of head for the front, and at the sides, just where you want it to come down to-mid ear or for winter bottom of ears, and at the back to the nape of neck from the straitedge on top of head.If you make it too long at the back the front will get pushed over the eyes when you bend your head back.

For the top piece just make it slightly egg shaped and the same circumfrance as the head measurement.
