I have been seeing many days with way over 200 on trap talk and also over 200 on trapping only lately. I guess that is a good thing, but with trapping only sometimes there are only 2-3 posts for the day when it says 173 or so viewing. Don't know if that is some glitch or do we have that many browsing the sites as of late?

I'm guilty of just browsing through here until I just joined. No wifi at my house and terrible phone reception so I get booted off the internet often so I have to keep going back on.

I'm seeing a solid increase in "non trappers" taking up trapping. Mostly deer/turkey hunters and land managers. But also pest control as they cut their own throats on on termite and household and decided to screw up squirrel catching as well. Now some are straying into predator work. Some homeowners as well.

In others words they are dealing with the results of the last few decades of voting in policies that killed the wild fur market and closed lands to fur trappers.

Our WTA does many fairs and outdoor shows and the last 10 years or so with a huge increase the last 3-5 years are land owners with hunting property maybe or maybe not their 2nd home etc. and they want to trap coyotes on their property. They also want to catch a fisher etc. to tan. They have little to no interest in catching even modest volumes of fur. Some want to catch an animal and have someone handle that for them and quite a few want to catch the animal, handle and tan etc. Most know little about fur handling, tanning or trapping. Several joing our WTA as $40 or so dollars is not an issue for them but mostly for the info and contacts. Most will never probably run long lines or even modest lines but we need to find out how to tap into their skill sets and revenues as many are upper middle income and have political connections.

I started teaching the required trapping education course here in Idaho six years ago. The first three years the people mostly taking the course were individuals that previously trapped but needed the certification since they didn’t trap a number of years and wanted to get back into it. Now most people taking the course never trapped before. A variety of reasons why people are now taking the course. Recently in the courses I had several “survivalist”. A young “gypsy” type woman who traveled 8 hours from Northern Idaho in an old hippie van “jjust wanted to take the course since it is outdoor related. Some are Landowners who want to get rid of the coyotes on their property. One woman the company she works for wanted her to take the course so she could trap muskrats off the property apparently causing damage. One person said he just wanted to see what it is all about and another to learn more about wildlife. Sometimes I wander if a few of these individuals may be anti’s.
