We had 4 beef cows on 2 acres or about 2.2 acres. We had to buy our grain and about 1200 small squares to feed 4 cows, and we sold 3 calves after weaning and fed one for yourselves. Grain was about 5 ton per year.
We now have 20 ewes and get say 30-32 lambs. We buy 600-700 bales of hay and 2 ton of grain. With the drought here we will buy 200 more bales or cull down. That will be decided by Labor Day.
With beef we sold 3 calves per year for about 1500. (this was before the astronomical prices) and two families too two blended quarters and we sold a half for about $400-500.
With sheep we grind 2-3 old ewes, sell 2 for $50 each and we well 24 lambs for about $3,000.
Beef you can feed more grain when hay is bad or high cost. With sheep if you feed even a little too much they get acidosis quick. They are bred to be grazers. We needed to upgrade our hay and that is getting harder to find every year too.

I had a small beef herd for 5 years (four cows) and we needed to buy all the feed except for 1 acres of grass pasture. I sold them and bought some ewes. Less work, and I lose less money and mutton and lamb taste good too.

Calves pay for hay on 23 acres
Plus like Kirk said, The Grandkids love them.

The title of this thread reminds me of the question males need to answer before donating blood.
