Propylene glycol works. I dont really know if it spooks any coyotes, but i know a few havent been spooked. Sometimes I use it in the trap bed then wax sand over the top. Saves on waxed sand.

Last 2 seasons I used wax dirt/bone dry peat mixed 50/50 in a bucket and had very good results with it. The peat added to the wax dirt gave it just the right color for my area, and the wax helped wick away the water, plus it all packed very well. I also did some sets where I bedded the trap in 100% peat, then just top coated it with the 50/50 mixture, and that worked good as well. The only thing I started doing last season towards the end of the season is giving the set a light mist of propylene glycol to prevent frost.

I used dry dirt for years but waited until it stayed below freezing for extended periods to do so. Even when it is 10 degrees here the ground still has moisture in it and it leaks out. After 3 or 4 days I have to remake a set with dry dirt. If you make a large bed - say 12 to 15'' across it works longer but eventually the moisture comes out of the ground and freezes it all. It doesn't work with a small trap bed here.

I used salt and calcium chloride too. They worked but made sloppy wet spots that the trap squished out of when the formerly dry dirt sucked up water and it turned to pudding.

I like waxed dirt.

Since I started using the Zagger method of covering with grass, I haven’t looked back.

Once freezing becomes an issue I switch to sets that don’t freeze. Exposed trail sets mostly. If I’m trying to catch coyotes I’ll do dirt holes with calcium chloride, but for fox and bobcat exposed trail sets are deadly and keep working in most weather. Sometimes have to brush the snow off em and that’s about it.
