I have six that were planted from acorns I stratified about 5 maybe 6 years ago, three are producing acorns for the first time this year.

Sawtooths usually drop in September and the deer love them.

Have planted more than a dozen. All were bare-root seedlings. Have a couple that are 30 to 40 feet tall and 16 or 18 years old.. Beautiful trees. NOT A SINGLE ACORN!

Why? I do not know.

Also have some that are 16/18 years old and are only 10 feet tall. Also...no acorns.

I learned to NOT plant them in sandy or light-colored soils or plant them in any amount of shade.

Plant in dark soils and full sunlight and MAYBE they will make an acorn. Maybe not.

I have some in my yard that are close to 50 years old and some that I planted in 1991 from seed. They do not produce acorn every year some produce regular and some not so much. They will start producing an around 7 years old. One thing about newly planted trees is to keep them trimmed so they will grow. If you do not trim them they will be more of a bush than a tree and be slow growing but keep the bottom limbs trimmed and they will grow fast. They drop there across earlier than most oaks do here they start in September.

I have planted hundreds of sawtooth oaks. They are fast producers of large acorns that deer love. I have three in my yard that usually produces many seedlings every other year if I don't mow around them.

There two catogories of oaks, Red and White. Reds are higher in acid and bitter. Southern Red Oaks drop early in Sept. If you bow hunt in NC they will pull them in. About weeks later, the Whites start to drop and deer wont eat Reds anymore. White oak acorns are lower in acid and not so bitter. For the most part the acorns are much larger.
Sawtooth oaks produce quick and have large crops. If you are planting acreage as a food plot, plant other "white oaks" with them to keep a food source longer. White Oak, Swamp Chestnut Oak, Shagbark Oak, and overcup make up a long season of acorns dropping. All should produce some in about 5 years.

I have about 40 sawtooth, planted 10-11 years ago as bareroot seedlings. Very hardy trees, they can take a lot of abuse (buck rubs and run over with tractor) and survive. Most of them started producing around age 7 and most have a big acorn crop every year. They drop earlier than native oaks, around mid-September. Squirrels and deer hit them hard as they are the first acorns to mature.

Yes. I planted 8 of them 6 years ago at 15 feet apart. That's way too close. They produce extremely well every year. They start dropping acorns in my area around the 1st of sept. The bears love climbing them and breaking off limbs to get to the acorns. Deer love them too. I also planted chestnuts that drop towards the middle of sept. Keeps the deer around until after bow season.

Amount of rain and late frost during pollination time effects acorn production more than anything.

Why would a tree not produce acorns?
Acorn crop failures can occur if there are extreme weather conditions such as a lack of rainfall during the spring, late freezes after the start of flowering,

16 to 18 years in a row of bad weather? Nah....

There is something else wrong with my sawtooths.
