Is that a Carolina Cross? Our melons set fruit late too. I'm concerned all the rain may be an issue now too.

Yes sir Carolina Cross the only problem I have as this year is getting them to set fruit , as you know too much water is bad for watermelons contrary to what some believe

Drove by a sandy soils river bottom farm the other day......half planted to corn, the other half to soybeans.......and both were burnt up. Granted, they have had hot dry weather, but nearby farms that are not that sandy were looking pretty good.

Strikes me that place would be perfect for melons. If so, anything they need to do special? Have heard the old timers would dig a big hole and backfill with rotted manure, then plant in that.

Any tricks to growing melons on sand?

BTW, in that same area, there used to be a family that grew a lot of melons. Sold them at their farm, but also trucked them to markets KC. They sold one variety that was used to make pickled watermelon rind...........and those were HUGE.......the rind being about 3 inches thick. If memory serves, those rand 80 pounds plus. The edible melon part not so hot, but people bought to eat anyway.........just based on size. If it was that big, it had to be good.......or so they thought.

Your right on the manure etc and I don’t grow these to eat just for the fair competition. They are a 110 day melon it’s hard for me to get them ripe
