Probably a sore subject on a trapping site, but do we have any members that night/thermal hunt coyotes. If so could you share your setup and what works for you. Been “experimenting” with it this week without trying to educate. I’ve gotten an initial response with a lone female howl, but drew a blank on the first night.
Last night I went where I “thought” they’d be instead of where they told me they were the previous night and again got a response in the same spot they were the last time.
So I’m still several hundred yards away and positioned and scanning that direction when something catches my peripheral and it’s a young coyote coming from the complete opposite direction heading straight to the cut off caller. I swing around but can’t get on him as every time he stops he’s behind a tree with the front half always covered.

So if anyone has any advice I’m all ears. If you don’t want to comment here for fear of being looked down upon just hit me up with a PM. I’m all for killing them any way I can whether it’s trapping or hunting them.

I've been thinking about tooling up to call/hunt coyotes. I've killed a few grey fox and 1 bcat back in my teenage years with an electronic caller....yeah..it was illegal here in Ga then too....lol

Swamp, that humidity and skeeters are just as bad if not worse at night. But when a pack answers, it does get the ole ticker ticking double time. I just need to learn how to get results.

If you were closer to me here, I know a few places where the coyotes would likely run into your lap when the call comes on....

I've been trying to capture a few of em in between beaver jobs, but haven’t been very successful. Did catch 3 this summer, so far. Entered 2 of em in the GON Coyote Cull drawing. Can only enter one per month...May, June, July. Didn't have much time in June to catch one, but did get a May and a July. Hope to win the $500 cash or the TrapShed gift certificate...lol. But, the rifle would be OK too.

I can see our coyotes in the West part of the State are as beautiful as those in the East, lol!

Wanna Be. Kill them anyway you can. I always killed them while out hog hunting with thermals. I had access to lots of peanut field. LoTs of coyotes on edges. I used = AR 15 with = IR Hunter thermal on it. Also used the = Armsight Thor for a will mounted on AR 15. I wore Flir type helmet with PVS 14 on it to walk around with. You can mount PVS 14 on left eye side. Walk around and scan fields Then IF you need to take a quick shot. Right eye is free

Not trying to recover the fur shoot what /where you can . Put a round threw the hips he's done ......

Don't night hunt but hard to beat pup in distress this time of year....

I used to do a lot of night hunting for yotes and in my experience if you are getting them talking with female howls and such you are winning half the battle.
Pup distress is the silver bullet for yotes, but when you hit that sound be ready when they come they come in a hurry! Good luck!

Really got into it this winter. Had played around some with it, but really decided to figure it out. We don’t have a huge coyote population in this area. But have gotten where we can find and kill a couple a night. Far as thermals we are running pulsar and Rattler AGM. It takes a bit to get a feel for what color set up you like. White hot is my go to, it’s a little harder on the eye. But I think it makes things pop a little quicker. Far as calls go, I run a lucky duck and buddy runs fox pro. Calls depend on the time of year. Howls are good for locating, a fire whistle also works well. For the most part a rabbit, pup variety will cover 90%. Watch the wind, if possible offset the call a little to the upwind side. But always make sure you have someone watching the call. Some will run over it no matter the wind. One of the biggest things we have found is judging yardage, it takes some time get that. It’s a pile of fun and very rewarding when it works out.

Got out there a little after sunset and had a spot already in mind I wanted to go to. I parked the truck about 250yds away and walked to my spot. The wind was perfect so I picked a place to hang the caller and a pine with shrub brush around it to set up. I listened until right before dark then started with a female howl again. This time I was met with silence. I’d been told pup sounds was the way to go right now, so I picked “pup screams” and only had the volume set to 10.

Immediately I got a response so I crunk it up to 13 or so and they really started carrying on. I dropped it back to 8 with my left hand while balancing the rifle on the monopod in my right. I could tell they were close and coming and shoved the remote in my pocket.

I saw them coming before my left hand found the rifle. They stopped I settled, and then they started coming closer. One got off the road and in some brush ahead of the other and stopped. I squeezed the trigger and he went down! The other took off to the right and I tried a quick “whoo” with the mouth to try and stop him but he wasn’t having it.

Now here’s where I have an issue. One, I forget to hit record. Two, I just can’t judge distance so when they drop in brush I’m resorted to just going where I “think” they are. With hogs I can still see the heat signature. This little guy I couldn’t. After 15 minutes I finally found it.

I’m shooting 165gr tipped Core Lokts. I won’t give details but let’s just say I wouldn’t have had any normal chores had it been a deer. That includes quartering.

Again, thank you gentlemen! I know I still have a long ways to go to be consistent, but man that was fun!! Being older and having to use readers to see the remote, and shooting off a monopod are things I need to work on or refine. Some things I can’t change, but some improvements can be made. It was 89 degrees and feel like 100 at sunset, lol. I bet Winter time would really be fun!!

How do you like the AGM compared to the pulsar?

I know this was to Matt, but I run an iRay on that gun and went with the AGM TS35 640 on my AR10 which my son uses. So far he’s likening the AGM. And it was a lot cheaper than the iRay. I think if I get another it will be the AGM. That Rattler could double as a monocular. Think it’s all of 1#.

I really like it a lot. My son has it in his rifle, but I have used it many times. It has everything that you need to make it effective. He can detect most anything that I can. It sights in easy, keeps it zero. Has several of the color modes, can do pictures or videos. Can be used as a handheld scanner, thr mount is easily taken off and put back on. It runs on cr123 batteries or a battery pack. Is it as clear as the pulsar pixel wise, no. Does it have all the bells and whistles that the pulsar has, no. But you can buy 2 for the same price. For the money, I don’t think you can go wrong with it.

Matt do you have the TS35 384 or 640? Luckily we knew someone with a TS35 384 and a TS25 384 and my son looked through those before purchasing. Now he was comparing to the IRay but knew we wanted to go with the 640 afterwards. I have a dealer I buy from and he’s treated me right on both scopes. Before I buy a monocular, I’ll buy another AGM and let it double as a scope if needed. Like you said, my sons friend takes his scope off to use as a scanner and puts it back on for the shot. He even showed my son that trick when he took our scope over to sight it in.
I’m sure y’all know this, but tinfoil stapled to a backboard makes a great thermal daytime target.

It’s the TS35 384. I bet the 640 does really well. I really like it, like you I plan on getting another for a scanner/backup scope. Yes, foil does well. We made a shadow box sort of. With cardboard around the box, cut a hole the size you want in it. Place tin foil over the hole, we use a 3” AR500 target hung behind it. Heat the target up with a torch. Gives you w good aiming point and last for several shots.
