I trap and call coyotes too. Having fun anyway I can is ok by me. I have been calling coyotes at night long before all this fancy thermal and IR night vision stuff has been around. I even made my own remote caller long before you could buy one (45 years ago). Used an old army box with 2 6 v gel batteries tied together to make 12 volt to drive an under dash add on car cassette player. Went to a hobby place and got a remote car kit and took a steering actuator and rigged it to turn the volume up or down on my caller from afar. Put a cassette tape in with volume way down and walked down wind and turned volume up or down as needed. I killed alot of coyotes and fox with a shotgun on a full moon with snow on the ground that way. After 51 years of calling I can tell you coyotes play the wind then, now and always will !! Be super quite as you set up either walking in or driving in. I like to set up out in the middle of nowhere ... where I can see for a long ways off. I throw a couple male long howls and wait 5 0r 10 minutes. Then a female howl. and wait again. I have a lot of coyotes come in just on a couple howls. I howl way more than I use critter squeals. Everybody and their cousins use a rabbit sound. Nowadays I have a Foxpro caller with a 200 yard remote. I usually set up 150 plus yards downwind of my caller. Yes it is true some yotes come in hard to the caller but if you see that happening with your thermal. shut the caller down and use a squeaker call to get them to come closer to you. I made a gunner swivel chair on my box of the truck and it works great on dark no moon lite nights. Scan the field 360 degrees while looking thru my scope. However the coyotes would hang up once in awhile till I figured out they must me seeing some glare off my truck windshield or paint. So now when I call with my truck I throw a cover over the truck made from camo burlap. Coyotes come from all directions but almost always work a semi circle down wind a couple hundred yards, usually right toward me. On lighter nites or when I walk in I have designed a swivel chair to sit and turn 360 degrees while using my ATN Thermal gun mounted scopes as a scanner. The ATN scopes last all night on a charge. I haven't had too many problems with them. One thing that bothers my thermal scope is moisture in the air. I have hunted with guys that own other brand scopes and moisture seems to bother them also. I have called for an hour or more and sometime it takes that long for a yote to come in. Also it seems like most of the time critters like to come in before midnite... but that said anytime is hunting time. I've called in lots of bobcats also some fox too. Just get out there and have fun....some nites are great... some nites sucks. You just never know [Linked Image]

That’s a sweet set up. I’d like something like that but I have a shell on the back of my truck.

I’ve watched some videos of guys using something similar to your set up, except they use lights to scan and have the caller within 20-30 yards from the truck. And they use white light saying that the light actually prohibits the coyote from seeing them but doesn’t affect them.

My issue would be trees causing shadows. I don’t have fields to hunt, I just try to pick a higher elevation than what’s all around me. I’m going to try it from some tower stands this week. Both stands were set up for deer and our predominant winter wind is NE. Our entire Summer wind has been SW which had me placing my hog bait sites for that particular wind.

Appreciate all the comments. Hoping others chime in as well.
