Don't know what your driving or time frame but if you want to completely bypass Chicago try going to Muskegan, Michigan and taking the ferry across to Milwaukee. It might add a nice change to your trip and be something to talk about with friends, family, and trappers!

Unless you hit major constuction and the Interstate is closed. I was detoured down 8 mile in Detroit one time, and I believe one of the streets was Greenfield that you used also. Ferals were roaming from car to car at stoplights. I defused a potential problem before it could get started, all because of a detour. I'm good scout, Be Prepared.

I have driven all over that part of world for a lot of years. Even with construction hwy 30 will take longer so long as you avoid heavy traffic times. Where are you starting from and whats your destination?

I drive out to Montana from NY every fall. I highly recommend using Bing to give you a choice of routes. It is highly regarded as one of the best routing softwares. Here is an example: Bing - NY to WY. If you have CarPlay in your vehicle then travel with GoogleMaps on so it can redirect you around any traffic problems. I avoid travelling anywhere near Chicago during afternoon rush hour traffic.

I will also WARN you and anyone else about the BS speed trap cameras located in the City of LeClaire, Iowa, just as you cross over the Mississippi going west. They take your picture, a company gets a cut of the fine, and a city policeman verifies the picture and they send you a "ticket" in the mail several weeks later. It is NOT a traffic violation that can impact your driver license, nor insurance, it is a violation of a city ordinance. It is nothing more than a BIG moneymaker for the city but best to avoid it by travelling the speed limit for that stretch. "Feb 14, 2022 — LeClaire's two speed cameras have issued $6,310,150 in fines in 10 months. Police can't say if the cameras reduced crashes."

Both towns on I 90. There is your answer. Its a long drive to the IL line. I would leave early and drive to South Bend IN. Get a room. Get up early. Leave 2-3 CST. (you will gain an hour ) and drive through Chicago. By 6 you will be far enough the heavy traffic will be on the east bound side. Once you hit the WI border cities wont be a problem anymore. Madison is usually pretty smooth sailing. You will be south of Minneapolis. After that cities are very manageable for the rest of your journey. There is no way to avoid Chicago without adding a LOT of miles. IMO this is your best option.

When driving through Chicago, I always tried to time it so that I would go through about 4 or so in the am.
