Perilla mint is an invasive species that is found across eastern North America. This annual can outcompete native vegetation and is toxic to livestock. It will be blooming soon so now is the time to get out and take care of it!

Hope you find the video useful.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Anthony

I've lost several cattle a few years ago from it. Draught years and short pastures compound the problem.

Drought does have a big impact on if livestock will eat it. Perilla tends to stay green even in drought, at least longer than most other things. It is a huge problem here in KY - the stuff is literally everywhere.

Thanks Anthony. I've never seen perilla mint growing in my part of Ohio. When I lived in Dayton, my nextdoor neighbor planted a purple form of perilla in his flower beds, which after it flowered, spread to my flower beds. I liked it, until it started coming up like a purple blanket of leaves. We both ended up pulling it all within a couple of years. It was just to competitive with other plants.

Keith

Keith - the lite, wind blown seeds spread quickly as you found out. If you get to it before it gets too out of hand perilla is easy to control with hand pulling. I tend to pull it as I see it, but in some areas it is so thick and abundant spraying is about the only option.

I don’t believe I’ve come across any of it here in northern Pa. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for it though. I’ve kept bees for 50 years…if they were working it, I’d have noticed it.

Bigbrownie - Once you get north of the Ohio River it gets spotty as to where it is found. Bees will work it hard - which is part of the problem with it. People see the bees on it and think its a good plant to have around and they don't control it. Problem is it has zero value to wildlife and is horrible for native plant communities. Where I'm at it is taking over in many places. I'd much rather have goldenrod, ironweed, cup plant and mountain mints for fall bee food than this stinking perilla.

It’s amazing how the stiltgrass has spread here. It’s growing on every logging road and trail in my area. What’s equally amazing is how nearly everyone is oblivious to it. They don’t even know what it is.

Japanese knotweed chokes off about every slow moving waterway in my part of the country. Good for honey making, bad for the environment.

Same here with the stiltgrass - it is covering about every woodlot. Not much knotweed here yet, but there are some streams that are covered up in it. Knotweed is a tough one to get under control. Stiltgrass is at least easy to kill, just takes awhile to run through the seedbank.

Thanks for the videos. I have both of the invasive on my property. Never knew they were. I'm constantly pulling stiltgrass out of my liriope.

Thanks AT! Don't be offended that I don't "like" your vids, I DO appreciate them ALL though!
