You ain't whistlin' Dixie... I've probably dropped $1500 on parts and spent 24-30 hours turning wrenches in the last 2 months keeping my fleet (mostly) roadworthy. And most of that work has centered around bearing failures.

It would seem that we have reached the highest pinnacle of engineered obsolescence when it comes to bearings.

dontcha hate those sealed hub units

I bet someone could figure out right where to drill a ting hole and put a grease zert on them you pumped some grease in every 10K miles and they would go a lot longer

I have done 2 this year

my concern is they are just getting started in planed obsolescence , soon your car will be self destructing by the time the payments are made with virtually no way to stop it , making every component cheaper and harder to replace.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

You got it Pete... But I only had to change the rear driver on the Jeep. Pretty sure it lasted 13 months on a 1 year warranty. But it isn't too onerous to replace those.

The snowball started rolling with the A/C belt tensioner pulley on the Tacoma... Bearing seized late last fall and shredded the belt. Wife said don't worry about it she wouldn't need the A/C over the winter. But she was on my butt when it started to warm up. Pulley was still good, so I pressed the old bearing out. NSK bearing, 37mm OD x 12 mm ID... Silly me for thinking "off the shelf" item.

Not a single lunkhead at O'Reilly's could use the computer to search for a new bearing... But they were happy to sell me a new pulley for $32. So I bought it. And then to satisfy my curiosity I swung by NAPA... They had a suitable bearing, supposedly "marine grade" for... You guessed it... $32. Somebody was getting $32 out of me that day.

And that started the downhill slide.

On some newer cars , you can fry the computer doing this. Not recommended. Test with a volt meter , safer.

X2 Tried that on an old dodge I had and fried all the lights that were on. Took out tail lights, head lights and dome lights.
