I had an unfortunate casualty. I found this Two toed Amphiuma after removing a beaver dam. It's the largest North American salamander. Theres a one toed and a three toed also. You can see the front legs close to the head and the rear legs on the back section close to the Cloaca.
They’re not supposed to live in captivity, but my daughter took one about the same size to her 1st grade class and they kept her for 3 years. 100s of kids watched her and helped to take care of her. She was fat and happy when she was released.

I have caught about a dozen of the large salamanders in Alabama over the last 50 years, the largest about two feet long. Most were caught while raking crawfish out of ditches and swampy areas. Below is a link to Alabama salamanders.

I've got them coming up out of my pond by the dozens. They crawl into our window wells and die. Black with yellow spots, but not nearly as large as those in the photos.

As an American I'm growing tired of our ancestors being compared to the migrants of today.
