In that year assuming its a 22 engine, you can overhaul it without removing the engine, very easy and cheap.
Remove head and have it reconditioned.
Remove oil pan.
Remove piston rod end caps and remove pistons out the top.
Remove main bearing caps starting from the rear.
When the forward most bear cap is removed the forward end of the crank shaft will drop down a bit allowing you to rotate the top half of the bearings out of place for removal.
Then hone out the cylinders and remove any ridge on the top of the cylinder if one has formed, most likely it hasn't.
Then a VERY important step. ALL of the honing grit must be remove from everthing. I start with a spraying with a good solvent, then hot soapy water, then repeat the process a couple more times until all wiping rags are clean with no black or grey residue.
Replace rings on pistons per instructions, be sure to check end gaps of rings in each cylinder before installing rings on pistons.
Installation of new bearings is easy. Use Plasti-gauges to make sure you have the correct clearances.
Install reconditioned head.
Bearings and rings are cheap, the most costly part is the head rebuild.
If there is any internal engine damage or if your crank is damaged then it's better to instal a different engine.

Those older trucks are pretty handy I spotted an older rusty Ranger pick up today the guy need a spot to hook a bungee cord on it. He drilled a hole in the good part of the fender it was genius really. LOL
