I know it is different for you Northern and Southern folk but just curious.

Petska Fur did a talk once, I don't remember the exact dates but he said, start after this date north of this interstate, after this date north of this highway, etcc. Marty might have that info.. December 7th has always been my target date for starting on coyotes.

If I waited on good fur on a coyote in this area, I'd never trap one. With that said, a December coyote does look better than a September coyote, but still pretty much worthless.

Up in this area I usually get started around the 1st of Nov. But our best coyote are usually between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

If I started In Oct or Dec they would still be worthless around my part of WI.

Depends on what you want to do with them.
For sale to the raw fur market,or personal use and the particular article you will use them for.
Mid oct is good for certain uses,mid nov for raw fur market(which is pretty low right now even for prime)
That is for more northern areas,have no clue what southern coyotes look like at those times of year.

Why start before they look decent. That a lot of work for a $3-$5 coyote this year.

They won't be worth it this year by that date in Oregon. Go catch $30 beavers before a $3 coyote.

I will trap them even if they are worth $5. In this area if no one is trapping they populate quite fast. Our deer herd suffers in that case plus we then have to deal with mange if we get to many.

As soon as everyone in the family gets their deer. Sometime in late November.

In eastern Oregon anytime after the 1st of November.

I should clarify I’ll kill coyotes year round it’s part of what I do. Normally about November 1 I’ll start looking at them to see how the quality is. Some are definitely better than others then. By Nov 15 most are looking pretty good. Fur prices even on years like the last 2 for me aren’t as bad as most peoples. I’ve got a couple guys that pay about $35 a coyote.

During the “normal” coyote value years I’d set 11/1-11/14, reset 12/1-1/7. The last 2 years I trapped coyote I set 12/1 and pulled 1/7. During the early years my 11/1 coyotes were of a better value than the 1/7 ones due to rubbing/breaking. Two years being paid to work on a heartworm project for MSU,I trapped well February and got firsthand experience on watching coyote fur degrade in my area. The coyotes here move into the woods/brush as so as the crops are off and the longer they’re in there hunting the more they get that grizzled, fuzzy-wuzzy look.

By Oct 25 about half will grade heavy,Nov 1st 85 to 90% will grade heavy,now since the market isn't there it really doesn't matter too much.I will start around the 25th again this year and donate most or all to the MTA tanned fur project.With $4.00 gas maybe more? I wont be getting more than 5 to 7 miles from my house,I'll be happy if I can trap 8 to 12 coyotes.

If you're gonna skin them, make certain they're not even a little flat or springy this year. Not to early or to late.
