Around here we have enough coyotes it hard to say if the coyote you catch next is the same one that u missed. I always tell myself it is for my own confidence. Lol

If you start the video at 48 seconds you’ll see the coyote marking the rock. Walks one way, then the other. Gives at least 4 chances to catch him. This is the reaction I want at a scent post. It’s not guaranteed by a short post, but I think it ups the odds somewhat.

What were they rolling on?

And yeah, they were stepping all over that rock. As in real close.

No critique here, just an observation WB.

Why did the lure and urine only hold the pup’s attention for a few minutes?
He didn't stick around because there was nothing for him to eat.
That is a youngster’s top priority. He’s just like a teenager, always raiding the fridge. Show him what he’s looking for.

Sure, there is always a possibility you’ll catch him later, but bait would have most likely held him there long enough to make a mistake. Keep in mind post-type sets are a low percentage look compared to many others. That is a given.

You know all too well that there are other pups along with the adults milling around the area.
Ideally, you want to snag the adult female right out of the gate. She is the key. A flat is probably your best shot at getting her.

Hopefully that hitch in your get-along will heal up soon so you can get back to what you enjoy doing.

Best of luck on a fast recovery and a productive season WB!

Agreed bait would probably be ideal. But I just can’t wrap my head around anything eating ant covered bait or digging through an ant bed to get to bait if any was left. Yes, ants are that bad here. I went to watch the dove fields this morning and just leaning next to a small pine I got covered in ants and I should’ve known better!!!
He was there for 5 minutes from 0110 to 0115, I thought that was plenty long to catch him. Guess I’d have to see the tracks to know how close he came to getting caught or how far off I was to catch him. Maybe he’ll be back tonight, maybe not.
They are thinning the property about 250-300yds to the West…direction camera is facing. That property is THICK which I’m sure was holding a lot of predators and pigs. I think it will help us in the long run of taking away their sanctuary.

This is what I've seen from tracks in the snow at sets also. They may walk right by it the first time because they are on a mission, wind is wrong, whatever. But usually the first time they investigate it is when you get the most foot movement.

WB something I tried here that seemed to work for me you may want to try. When I put out bait hole in I will completely cover it with used cooking oil seems to keep the ants out of it. Maybe try it in the yard see if it works for you. You could also try fish oil. The used oil seems to double as an attractant also.

Hard for me to see the stick on my phone in the night pics put from what I can tell in those 3 pics I'm not sure the coyote actually put his nose up to the attractants on the stick. If that's the case I'd put the miss on them
Especially with it being a pup.

I've posted this before. You might give It a try WB.
It's made for indoor and perimeter use.
It works great on ants and has no smell that I can pick up on.
Spray a ring around the set and it will buy you enough time to make a catch.

If you have that much trouble it would be worth a try especially in early fall when pups are roaming about.

Finding a solution to the ant problem that allows you to use the most effective attractant you have for juveniles could make a big difference in your catch.

Wanna Be,
What’s with the colors with the attractants?

“Now here’s how it was lured…Red/Urine Blue/Night Train Green/Coyotero”

Was just showing where I placed the lures/urine.

Last night was a no show as well. We didn’t go anywhere near the set but went to retrieve a camera watching our SW entrance and see what all they’d thinned and to our surprise they aren’t thinning, they are clear cutting. So far a rather large section in the middle of that property GONE. We don’t know if that’s all they’re taking or if they’re coming back for more. If they keep cutting, whoever leases that property is going to be a little upset.

Those clearcuts are predator magnets for me. So should be half way decent news for you!

Critique time,on your set use a broom to brush out your disturbance area, even though it was in sand there was kind of a hard edge where the trap is blend in better.I understand that with your hip it was very tough to make the set,as it heals you'll be able to do more.Good luck, hope you heal up quickly, here's to burn circles.

You Betcha!

The trap bed really stands out.
Coyotes pick up on that and will avoid that spot like the plague.
Duff it in so it looks more like the surrounding ground.

Broom over the rough area out front and duff it in as well. Adults will key on disturbances like that and it is enough to make them balk. If it looks like there has been a disturbance when you’re finished it will be like a neon sign to a spooky coyote.

The key is to lay down a set leaving as little disturbance and scent as possible. Those are just a few reasons for using a tarp.
Sweeping out and duffing in the area should always be the last thing you do before driving off.

I didn't mention I use a tarp/cloth as well.I know it's another piece to carry, but it does make a difference on first night catches plus you can carry away excess dirt etc. makes your disturbance disappear.

Yeah, the outer really looked bad once I left and looked at the pics before posting. I normally find a pine limb with needles to brush over it. The trap bed looked like that before making the set, lol. White sand patches here and there. That broke pine and the white patches is what sorta made me set there.
Hoping it/they show back up and haven’t been run off from that set or the logging. What’s crazy about the section they cut is it almost looks like a plowed field now. They raked everything up. You could almost start building something where they’ve cut.
What’s worse is my pigs have left also. Was getting pics every night and killed a couple. In fact the night I saw the coyote and killed the hog, less than 4hrs later other pigs were on the bait site. I slept in that morning and they were there until a little after sunrise. Fortunately/unfortunately they haven’t been back. Not that I want pigs, but wanted to take advantage of the opportunities while being out of work.
The hip is finally getting a little better every day so it won’t be long now and I can start making more sets.
