Visitors in the 1700s noted they were lazy and shiftless, so never had a work ethic to kill

I read his book "Black Rednecks and White Liberals" about 15 years ago and really enjoyed it. I may re-read it.
I really appreciate Mr. Sowell's work and his presentation and writing styles are engaging and enjoyable.

Just happy to be here.

Not all Appalachians were lazy. If you get into the mountains and try to envision what it might have been like they were tough people that hacked out livings. They weren’t all Scot/Irish/English either. Now, many would rather draw ten dollars than work for a hundred. Probably a lot like your people in Baltimore I see on tv. I agreed with about everything he said in the video. There’s just a tendency to judge all hillbillies the same. When the social welfare programs started to ‘ stamp out poverty” it created more. But, they choose to live the way they do. Many live in small trailers, campers or those insulated outbuildings but may have a 30,000 Polaris Razr in the yard. I don’t understand it.

I'm not sure I appreciate being called a lazy bum. However, if it's bred into me and not my fault then I think I should be drawing a check for it. grin
